Brazen Thieves Steal $10,000 Jewel In New Brunswick Diamond Swap

This looks like a job for the Scooby-Doo kids! Sadly, after the overdoses that won't be the case. Turns out they weren't Scooby snacks.

Story out of Saint John, New Brunswick:

A New Brunswick jeweller says daring thieves walked off with a 10-thousand dollar diamond last Friday by switching it with a fake.

The owner of W. Smith and Company Fine Jewellers in Saint John says a middle-aged couple came in and asked the clerk to see a single diamond worth 10 grand.

They began to argue as a distraction, then the man asked to see a 25-thousand-dollar diamond.

Smith says he decided to speak out because he was angry, because his insurance deductible is so high it won’t cover the loss, and because a store video is so clear the public can help nab them. Cont.

Trial Begins For Day Care Owner Facing Assault Charges Against 12 Children

Story out of New Brunswick: 

The opening day of a former New Brunswick daycare owner's assault trial heard that Celine Lang allegedly tied a child to a chair with shoelaces, pushed the same child for jumping on a mattress and threw a glass of water in the face of another child to "calm him down."

Lang, 58, faces a total of 14 charges, including charges of assault against 12 children in her daycare.

She is also charged with assault and assault with a weapon — a flower pot — against an employee at Couvée de la Vallée daycare in Memramcook, N.B.

The Francophone South School District then opened its own investigation into the case, which led to the eventual closure of the daycare.

Charline Morrison and Marie-Claude Dussault of the school district testified that Lang denied accusations against her but did admit to throwing a glass of water in a child's face to "calm him down," allegedly describing the child as spoiled.

Officials with the school district said 15 of the children were pulled out of the daycare by their parents the same day. Cont.

"It Was Like A Bomb Went Off" - Car Crashes Into Home For A 9th Time

Story out of Tracy, New Brunswick:

A couple in Tracy, N.B., are fed up with vehicles crashing into their house, and have asked the provincial government to find a way to protect it.

Last month marked the ninth time a car has crashed into their home, finally stopping when the vehicle struck a power pole on the other side of their property, Terry and Maureen Noble say.

"It was like a bomb went off," said Terry Noble.

Noble said no one was hurt.

Their insurance companies are now rebuilding that section of the home for the ninth time since they moved in during the 1970s.

Maureen Noble said cars have struck the house so many times over the years that they tend to avoid that section of their home.  

The Nobles said they have asked the Department of Transportation to install a flashing light or a guardrail near their home.

"They put a sign in and reduced the speed," said Maureen Noble. "But obviously it's not doing the job."

The Nobles would like to use the front section of their home for a bedroom, or a living space, but don't want to take the risk, so it's currently being used as storage.

A Department of Transportation and Infrastructure spokesperson says the department is aware of the concerns and is reviewing the situation. Cont.
