Fundamentalist Preacher Blames New Zealand Earthquake On Homosexuality
But fundies always seem so calm and rational.
Story out of Christchurch, New Zealand:
In a sermon on Sunday (13 November) Brian Tamaki, head of the Pentecostal fundamentalist Destiny Church, blamed homosexuality, murder and other sins for natural disasters.
A video of his speech was posted to Destiny Church’s Facebook page on Sunday, followed by a blog post published on Wednesday (16 November), in which Tamaki claims to have predicted the event.
He made his claims a day before the quake, which killed two people, left thousands stranded and triggered a tsunami warning, hit.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, called the claims ‘stupid’, saying it was ‘madness’ to blame gay people.
The facts of life are New Zealand is a seismically prone country, with a number of very well identified fault lines,’ he told 9News.
Other Christian institutions also condemned Tamaki’s claims and said disasters were definitely not God’s way of punishing humanity.
‘If that was the case, if you followed that to its logical conclusion, a baby dying of cancer would be somehow sinful,’ Auckland vica Helen Jacobi told 9News. Cont. (Video)

7.8 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami In New Zealand
A strong earthquake hit along the east coast of New Zealand's South Island Sunday, with a 7.8 magnitude, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake caused power outages, damaged buildings — and generated a tsunami. Emergency officials are urging people to get to high ground.
"The tsunami threat is for the east coast of all New Zealand (including Christchurch, Wellington and the Chatham islands)," the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management said Sunday, urging residents to be wary of aftershocks and unpredictable high waves.
People in nearly 90 cities reported feeling the quake, according to the USGS. Chimneys toppled, and damage was reported more than 100 miles from the epicenter.
The quake struck nearly 60 miles north of New Zealand's city of Christchurch, at a depth of around 25 miles.
The powerful quake comes after Christchurch marked the five-year anniversary of a devastating earthquake that hit the city in February of 2011. Cont.

Thugs Beat Man For Wearing Pink Shirt
Story out of Blenheim, New Zealand:
A man who was beaten up as he walked home from work says two men attacked him simply because he was wearing a pink shirt.
Kent Morgan from Blenheim, New Zealand, was left cut and bloodied after being jumped at random as he made his way home following a shift at a local Irish Bar last Friday.
The 32-year-old was waking past a dark alleyway when he was called a 'pink shirt wearing homo' by the two men.
Despite Mr Morgan putting his head down and ignoring the pair as they continued to harass him about the colour of his clothing, he said they were seemingly determined to create a fight no matter what he did.
Instantly knowing he was going to be attacked, he braced and prepared to face the pair.
Mr Morgan said he had made a trip to hospital upon the insistence of his wife, while he'd also promised not to walk home from work anymore.
While on the whole he's feeling fine, Mr Morgan said the anti-homosexual motive for the attack didn't sit well with him.
'I've got no issues with homosexuals and I've got mates who are gay, so it’s clearly a blight in the way these guys have been brought up,' he said. Cont.

“You Should Change The Name Of This Country To Nazi Zealand” - Millennial Throws "Hissy Fit" After Trying To Hitchhike For 4 Days
Story out of Punakaiki, New Zealand:
A French hitchhiker was stuck on the side of the road in a tiny rural New Zealand village for days before he threw a “hissy fit,” destroying road signs and abusing motorists, according to reports.
Cedric Claude Rene Rault-Verpre, 27, was unable to hitch a lift out of the tiny hamlet of Punakaiki for four days before he reportedly let loose Monday.
“Oh he threw an absolute hissy fit; he was lying prone on the road screaming that New Zealanders were assholes and he couldn’t wait to get back to Europe,” local resident Neil Mouat told The Guardian.
He said Rault-Verpre, who had not had a bite to eat in two days, got into an argument with a local senior, and he was worried things might escalate so he called police.
Mouat said the Frenchman has only himself to blame for not being able to hail a ride.
“He was a spoilt Millennial, and he created a hell of a din,” Mouat said “But all that time he was standing in the wrong place to hitchhike – a corner with poor visibility and nowhere for cars to easily pull over.”
When asked by reporters for comment, Rault-Verpre said, “you should change the name of this country to Nazi Zealand.”
Senior Sergeant Paul Watson told The Guardian had Rault-Verpre started to walk, he would have been in the next town in a day. Cont.
