Canadian Doctor In Trouble For Trading Marijuana For Speakers

Story out of Regina, Saskatchewan:

A Regina doctor is accused of unprofessional conduct for allegedly giving someone he was involved with marijuana so he could get his stereo speakers back.

The allegation posted on the website of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan claims Dr. Ian Cowan gave two people who lived in Swift Current pot in 2011.

It says the doctor had been involved with one of them and, when that relationship ended, she kept some Bose speakers.

It's alleged the pot was given to the woman or the other person in return for the speakers.

The doctor's profile on the college's website shows he was suspended for two months in 2001 after pleading guilty to prescribing medications to a person with whom he had a sexual relationship. Cont.

Boy Acts Like 'Slobbering Drunk' For Months After Pharmacy Dispenses Wrong Dosage Of ADHD Meds

Story out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:

The mother of a four-year-old boy is left with a lot of questions after a Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy messed up her son's prescription, giving the boy 10 times the correct dose of an antipsychotic drug over a period of several months.

"These people are dealing with life-altering medications, this had serious repercussions from my son. He suffered for months."

Jackson-Buller's four-year-old son, Adam, suffers from ADHD and other behavioural problems.

The boy's doctor faxed a prescription to the Westgate Plaza Shoppers Drug Mart in Saskatoon.

The prescription was for a 0.3 ml dose of the liquid form of a drug called Risperidone, often used to treat mental or emotional disorders.

Instead, the pharmacy dispensed three millilitres to the boy: 10 times what was prescribed. The overdose went unchecked and undetected for months with each refill.

"The first time we gave Adam the dosage, about 30 minutes after, he was acting like a slobbering drunk. He couldn't stand up, he was drooling, he couldn't walk on his own. We had to carry him," Jackson-Buller said.

The error was finally discovered by accident four months later when Jackson-Buller again called one of Adam's doctors to say the side effects had not gone away and Adam was still feeling sick.

"She said, 'Let's up the dose, how much is Adam receiving?' I pulled out the Risperidone bottle and said he's receiving 3 millilitres. She said to me, 'No, no that's too much, he should not be receiving that amount, it's too high for a child his age.'"

Adam's mother says she's concerned the excessive dose may have caused damage to the boy's kidneys and liver, and that he will need to be tested repeatedly over the next five years to make sure there is no long-term damage. Cont.

4th Young Girl Commits Suicide In Northern Saskatchewan

A fourth young girl in northern Saskatchewan has taken her own life.

Prince Albert Grand Council Grand Chief Ron Michel told the crowd at the annual assembly Tuesday that a 10-year-old girl from Deschambault Lake had killed herself.

Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice-Chief Kimberly Jonathan said there was a wave of sadness and disbelief that washed over the room.

This comes as many people in northern Saskatchewan are still reeling after three girls, aged 12 to 14, also took their own lives in the span of four days. They were from Stanley Mission and La Ronge.

Deschambault Lake is part of the same health region as Stanley Mission and La Ronge, and is located approximately 240 kilometres east of La Ronge.

Both of those communities have been on high alert the past week after identifying more than 20 other young people considered to be high risk to take their own lives.

Counsellors and therapists have been working around the clock trying to support the communities. Cont.

"Everyone Is On Edge Right Now" - Northern Saskatchewan Communities Lose 3 Girls To Suicide

Story out of La Ronge/Stanley Mission, Saskatchewan:

The northern Saskatchewan communities of La Ronge and Stanley Mission are in shock after three young girls took their own lives within four days.

The girls were 12 to 14 years old.

"Everyone is on edge right now," said Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief, Tammy Cook-Searson. "It's a lot of pain to take when you lose a child and a family member."

Two of the girls were from Stanley Mission. The other girl was from La Ronge. There have been two funerals this week. The final funeral is on Saturday afternoon.

Cook-Searson said she's been in contact with the families of the girls. She said despite their grief, the families have come together to start a difficult conversation about how to stop this from happening to another young person in the community.

Health Canada has now stepped in and is helping to bring psychologists and counsellors from Saskatoon. This will continue until at least December. The provincial government is helping to co-ordinate emergency response efforts including bringing in therapists from neighbouring health regions. Cont.

"It's Very Devastating" - 14 Dogs Die At Boarding Kennel After Heater Malfunction

Story out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:

A problem with a heating system at a kennel in Saskatoon has left 14 dogs dead.

"There was a mechanical malfunction with the heating system," explained Bonnie Clark, manager of Playful Paws Pet Center located in the city's Sutherland Industrial area.

The kennel posted an apology to their Facebook page Saturday afternoon.

According to the post, the building's roof top heating units pushed the heat into one of the facility's upstairs kennel rooms. It got so hot that dogs being kept there died.

Clark said the owners of the dogs staying at the pet daycare and boarding centre are currently being notified.

"Certainly, our hearts go out to the families whose pets have died," said Patricia Cameron, executive director of the Saskatoon SPCA.  "It's very devastating. And to the people that worked at Playful Paws, because that has got to be someone's worst nightmare. It's a sad day." Cont.

"His Only Mistake Was Leaving Three Witnesses" - Saskatchewan Councillor In Hot Water Over Social Media Post About Aboriginal Man Murdered On Farm

Story out of Lampman, Saskatchewan:

A Saskatchewan reeve says the future of a councillor who posted an online comment about the shooting death of an aboriginal man will be a topic at an upcoming meeting.

A screen-grab of the post, from a user named Ben Kautz, was widely circulated after the death of Colten Boushie earlier this month.

Boushie, 22, of the Red Pheasant First Nation was killed after the vehicle he was in drove onto a farm in the rural municipality of Glenside, west of Saskatoon.

The property-owner, 54-year-old Gerald Stanley, is charged with second-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and was granted bail Friday.

"His only mistake was leaving three witnesses," read the post on a Saskatchewan farmers group Facebook page. The group has since been closed.

Kautz, a farmer near the small town of Lampman, southeast of Regina, is a councillor with the rural municipality of Browning.

His wife, Dawn Kautz, told The Canadian Press that she doesn't know exactly what the post said but that it was written in the heat of the moment. The family has had thousands of dollars worth of tools and gas stolen from their farm in the past, she said.

Her husband regrets the post, she added, and has offered to step down as councillor. Cont.

Saskatchewan's Deputy Premier Responsible For Liquor and Gaming Resigns After Driving Drunk

In today's lesson, class, we are learning about Situational Irony. It involves a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. Situation irony occurs when the exact opposite of what is meant to happen, happens. Next, patronizing...

Saskatchewan's deputy premier, Don McMorris, has resigned from cabinet after he was charged with impaired driving on Friday.

"I have no words to describe how sorry I am to my family, to my colleagues and to all the people of Saskatchewan for my actions. But saying sorry is not enough," McMorris said in an apology.

McMorris said he was returning home from the Fort Qu'Appelle region when he was pulled over in a construction zone near White City, a community about 10 kilometres east of Regina. The minister responsible for provincial insurer SGI and the liquor and gaming authority, SLGA, said he will leave the government caucus while dealing with the criminal charge. He will also be seeking counselling.

On May 13, speaking about the launch of an impaired-driving awareness campaign, he said too many people were dying in drunk-driving accidents in Saskatchewan. (Jackass) Cont.

Police say a disturbance at the Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport on Friday morning has resulted in drug charges. Police said a man was apparently displeased that his flight was not operating on time and made a verbal reference to causing damage with explosives.

“We had a call to our security operations center of an incident at a check-in counter of an air carrier,” said Richard Jasieniuk, airport public safety and risk manager.

“At that point, we immediately enacted our response plan. Our contract security guard, an on duty manager and myself responded to the area,”

Urban Planet Fires Woman As She's Being Taken To Hospital For Severe Allergy Attack

Story out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:

A Saskatoon woman who says she was fired from her job after an allergic reaction says the company has apologized, but she's still waiting to hear from the manager who fired her.

Duperreault, who was employed at Urban Planet for two months, has an anaphylactic allergy to peppers, including all bell peppers and hot peppers. She's also allergic to the touch and smell of mangos.

Normally, she said she carries an EpiPen in her bag, however when she went to grab it this time, it wasn't there.

Luckily, she says one of her coworkers was just pulling in, so she asked her for a ride to the hospital and her coworker agreed.

When she arrived at Lakeside Medical Clinic across the street, they gave her a dose of epinephrine and Benadryl. She then got into an ambulance and she says that's when she received a text from her manager saying she no longer had shifts at the store.

Duperreault said she never thought her allergic reaction would get her fired.

Duperreault said the parent company for Urban Planet, Y.M. Inc., contacted her on Thursday and she spoke to the CEO who personally apologized for how the situation was handled. She also said Y.M. Inc., has agreed to work something out so she's financially covered until she finds another job. But she says Y.M. Inc. did not say much about how the manager at Urban Planet acted. Cont.

Saskatchewan Woman Takes On Black Bear, Wins

Story out of Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan:

A Saskatchewan woman says it was both her scariest and her luckiest day — she fought off a black bear after it bit her on the leg during an afternoon walk.

Raschel Zeschuk lives in Paradise Hill, northeast of Lloydminster, and goes on daily walks with her two dogs.

But on April 21 the walk was anything but routine.

Zeschuk had just reached the end point of her usual route and turned around to return home when she heard rustling behind her.

"I glanced back and about five to 10 feet behind me was my dog running towards me," she said. Behind her dog was a black bear in hot pursuit.

She says she started to scream in an effort to scare the bear off and looked around for higher ground.

Zeschuk scrambled up on a poplar tree, which gave way and she fell backwards.

Her dog, Cosmo, began barking and Zeschuk had time to scramble back up on the tree.

"It started trying to climb up after me and that's when I kicked it in the nose as hard as I could and it ran off," she said.

She has six stitches in her leg but loves hiking and is working with someone to overcome her anxiety about future walks, given her recent experience. Cont.

Workplace Safety Concerns At the Ministry Of Workplace Safety

Story out of Regina, Saskatchewan:

Workers are back in the building following an asbestos scare that led to the evacuation of the downtown Regina offices of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety.

About 90 government employees on three floors were told to leave the office Tuesday morning. Word that workers were back in the building was noted around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Workers who were repairing a leak cut through a drain pipe. After that work was done and the area was cleaned up, it was determined that the pipe contained asbestos.

Officials said workers were told about the suspicious material and that a sample would be tested. The results, which were provided Tuesday, confirmed there was asbestos in the material and that was when the three floors were evacuated. Cont.
