104 Dead, 150 Injured After Train Derails In India

Story out of Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh:

At least 104 people were killed when 14 coaches of an overnight passenger train rolled off the track in northern India early Sunday, with rescue workers using cutting torches to try to pull out survivors, police said.

Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police, said the death toll was likely to rise because rescue workers had yet to gain access to one of the worst-damaged coaches. About 150 people were injured, he said.

The train derailed at around 3:10 a.m., jolting awake passengers who had settled in for the long trip. The bodies were retrieved from mangled coaches that had fallen on their side.

Rescue workers, soldiers and members of India’s disaster management force pulled 104 bodies from the wreckage, said Chaudhary, inspector-general of police in Uttar Pradesh state.

Rescuers used cutting torches to open the derailed train cars to try to reach those trapped inside, while cranes were deployed to lift the coaches from the tracks. However, they were moving cautiously because some of the coaches were precariously tilted, and there was a danger of the coach toppling over, possibly injuring those trapped inside.

In 2012, an Indian government report said about 15,000 people are killed every year in train accidents, caused mainly by outdated equipment and overstretched staff. Cont.

City dwellers, meanwhile, took "smog selfies" as they strolled through air so dirty you can taste and smell it.

Other selfie snappers joined hundreds of protesters in downtown New Delhi to demand the government address the deadly smog. Cont.

“Trump’s Victory Is Confirmed" - Indian Group Throws Celebration After Declaring Trump President

Story out of New Delhi, India:

An Indian fringe group on Friday celebrated the “victory” of U.S. presidential contender Donald Trump, hailing his friendship with diaspora Indians and backing his call to ban immigration by Muslims from countries hit by Islamic militancy.

With drums banging and speakers blaring, the Hindu Sena, or Hindu Army, gathered at Jantar Mantar – New Delhi’s answer to London’s Speakers’ Corner – to proclaim to a knot of TV crews that Trump had “already won” the Nov. 8 vote.

“Trump’s victory is confirmed early, due to his thoughts against Islamic terrorism and love for India and Hindus,” said Vishnu Gupta, the Hindu Sena’s self-styled national president.

Its celebration at a roadside stall featured posters bearing the slogans, “India Loves Trump” and “Trump Our Only Hope”. One supporter held up a portrait of Trump with a tilak, or religious mark, on his forehead and held a sweet to his mouth. Cont.

Indian Couple Banned From Mount Everest After Faking Photos

An Indian couple have been banned from climbing Nepalese mountains for 10 years after authorities determined that their claimed ascent of Mount Everest this year was faked.

Dinesh Rathod and his wife, Tarakeshwari, both police officers, were hailed as the first Indian couple to climb the world’s highest peak on 23 May.

The couple’s claim, initially verified by Nepalese authorities, was based on photographs they supposedly had taken at the peak.

But in June complaints were lodged by several other mountaineers including Satyarup Siddhanta, a climber from West Bengal, who said the couple had used doctored versions of photographs from his successful ascent two days earlier.

On Tuesday Nepalese tourism officials said an investigation had determined the Rathods never reached the 8,850-metre peak.

The police commissioner in Pune, where the two officers are based, said their fraud was “indeed shocking”. Rashmi Shukla said the couple had “tarnished the image not only of police force but of the whole country.” (I'm pretty sure systematic rape has already done that.) Cont.

India Bans Kite Strings After 2 Children, 1 Man Die After Their Throats Are Slit

A day after two people, including a three year old girl, died after getting entangled in the ‘maanjha’ (sharp string used for flying kites), the Delhi Government on Monday banned Chinese ‘maanjha’ in the capital. The move comes after Independence Day, when kite flying is practiced throughout the city. The sharp string is often coated with glass or metal to make it sharper, causing deaths of birds flying in the sky as well.

A 22-year-old man died Monday after his neck got entangled in the kite string, making him take a fatal fall from his motorcycle. The incident happened in west Delhi’s Mianwali Nagar area.

In another incident, a three-year-old girl Saanchi Goyal died when she was returning home with her parents after watching a movie in Naraina. The girl was looking out of open sunroof in the car when suddenly her neck got slit by a ‘manjha’ as they were passing through Rani Bagh area, a police officer said. Cont. (Video)

Torrential Rain Fall In India Sweeps Elephant Far From Home

Story out of New Delhi, India:

Plenty of back-and-forth intermingling happens along the 2,500-mile zigzag border shared by India and Bangladesh. But the Bangladeshis are having trouble returning a four-and-a-half-ton Indian visitor to its home.

The experts left without any good ideas for how to quickly reunite the elephant with its herd in India.

The elephant’s odyssey began in June, when it was caught in the raging Brahmaputra River and Indian villagers pelted it with stones when it tried to come ashore. The elephant retreated to the river and was carried far downstream, eventually crossing the frontier into the wetlands of Bangladesh.

As the elephant plodded through the marshes, so many Bangladeshis trailed in boats that police officers were deployed to keep them away, according to the Press Trust of India, a news agency.

Bangladeshi forest rangers subdued the elephant with a tranquilizer dart on Thursday. It collapsed into the water and had to be hauled onto dry land.

The wildlife authorities have since given the elephant vitamins, bananas, banana stems, sugar cane and bamboo leaves, said Tapan Kumar Dey, chief executive of Bangladesh’s Nature Conservation Society, who is helping the government deal with the situation.

“The elephant is quite O.K. and enjoying the food now,” Mr. Dey said. “Managing the crowd is a bigger problem for us.” Cont.

At Least 22 Killed In India After Bus Falls Into River Following Bridge Collapse

Story out of Mumbai, India:

Two buses plunged into a flooded river after an old bridge collapsed in western India, leaving at least 22 people missing and feared dead, an official said Wednesday.

Rescuers had not found the buses or any survivors hours after the single-lane bridge on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed about midnight Tuesday, said Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra state's chief minister.

The two Maharashtra state-run buses were carrying a total of 18 passengers, two drivers and two conductors, according to Fadnavis.

He said the bridge, constructed in the 1940s, likely collapsed because it was buffeted by strong currents from the Savitri River, which was flooded by monsoon rains. Cont.

Israeli Tourist Gang Raped In India

So India now is just a bunch of roaming animals in Tampa Bay Lightning shirts? Story out of New Delhi, India:

19 People Die In India After Drinking Cheap Booze

Similar incident last year saw 100 people die after drinking tainted liquor. Story out of Uttar Pradesh, India:

At least 19 people have died and another six have been blinded after drinking home-brewed liquor in northern India, police said.

Another 50 people fell ill after consuming the tainted liquor over the weekend and were being treated in hospitals in Etah in the Uttar Pradesh state.

Senior police officer Ajay Shankar Rai said the victims bought the liquor from a village shop on Friday evening and started falling ill and dying.

The shop owner, who has been arrested, was selling a pouch of tainted liquor for a mere 15 rupees (20p), six times cheaper than legal drink, he said.

Most of the victims were poor farmers and labourers, looking for a cheap means of intoxication.

India's poor often buy cheap home-brewed liquor made of syrups and medicines that are spiked with methyl alcohol and other industrial spirits to give it a kick.

District Magistrate Ajay Yadav ordered an investigation, but an excessive use of methyl alcohol in the liquor appears to have caused the deaths. Cont.
