Story out of Charleston, West Virginia:

A remorseless white man accused of shooting an unarmed black teenager to death in Charleston, West Virginia, after they bumped into each other Monday evening confessed and called his victim a “piece of trash,” police said.

William Pulliam, 62, was jailed on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting of 15-year-old James Means, whose aunt said was a loving teen who “could put a smile on anybody’s face.” Police said Pulliam “expressed no remorse.”

“The way I look at it, that’s another piece of trash off the street,” Pulliam told investigators, according to a criminal complaint filed by Charleston Detective C.C. Lioi.

James bumped into Pulliam outside a dollar store and the two “exchanged words,” according to the complaint. Pulliam then walked into the store, and James went to sit on a friend’s nearby porch.

Clayton Ferguson, who was on the porch with James, told police that Pulliam later came out of the store and walked past them. Pulliam and James began arguing again, Ferguson told detectives, and when James walked across the street to confront him, Pulliam drew a gun and shot the teen twice. Cont.

Man Arrested After Supplying Drug Addicts With Elephant Tranquilizer, Leading To Overdoses

Story out of Huntington, West Virginia:

An Ohio man was accused of distributing an elephant sedative to people, which, according to federal prosecutors, resulted in about two dozen overdoses in a West Virginia city.

On Monday, prosecutors charged 22-year-old Bruce Lamar Griggs of Akron, Ohio, with distributing carfentanil and fentanyl, local news organizations reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, carfentanil is an elephant sedative that is 100 times more potent than fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid used as part of anesthesia to help prevent pain

Griggs was charged Aug. 26 with heroin distribution in connection with 27 overdoses that resulted in two deaths on Aug. 15 in Huntington, West Virginia. Many of the overdoses were in an area surrounding one apartment complex in the city, leading officials to believe the cases were connected. Cont.

Watch Teacher Take Mic Away From Autistic Child During Thanksgiving Play

A West Virginia boy with autism was reduced to tears during his school’s Thanksgiving play after a teacher ripped the microphone away before he could speak.

Filmed by both of his parents, the heartbreaking moment at Nutter Fort Primary School sees 6-year-old Caleb dressed as a turkey, complete with a playful headpiece, standing in line behind his classmates as they, one by one, deliver their lines into a microphone. As the young boy steps up, a teacher hurriedly takes the mic from its holder, leaving him in tears.

Caleb’s father, Kent Squires, posted the video to Facebook where he explains that while his son has level one high functioning autism, he “has the biggest heart and is always happy.”

Harrison County Superintendent Doctor Mark Manchin told 5 News the moment in question came after the play had ended and that Caleb was not supposed to be in that part.

“It’s a mistake that was made. There was no malice,” he told the news station. “This teacher, as all of our teachers, truly care about these young boys and girls. The program was over, and the teacher had taken the microphone.” Cont.

Cat Shot Through The Head With Arrow Suffered For 24-Hours Before Being Found And Saved

Story out of Fayetteville, West Virginia:

Residents of a neighbourhood in Fayetteville, W.V., were shocked to find a beloved local cat slumped in the bushes with an arrow between its eyes and out of its back.

Fluff’s owner, Dean Workman, began to worry when Fluff didn’t return home Saturday night. He didn’t see him for the whole weekend.

On Monday, neighbour Mike Price was called by another resident.

“The lady up the street called and said, ‘Mike! You need to get up here. The neighbour’s cat has been shot,’” said Price in an interview with WVNS-TV.

Price found Fluff lying beneath some bushes, alive but restrained by the arrow that had entered through his head.

The neighbour rushed Fluff to a vet, who determined that the arrow had been lodged in the cat for over 24 hours. Cont.

Cop Fired For Not Shooting Suicidal Man With Unloaded Gun

Story out of Weirton, West Virginia:

A West Virginia police officer was reportedly fired after not shooting an armed man during an incident in May.

Then-Weirton police officer Stephen Mader was involved in a heated exchange with Ronald D. Williams, 23, of Pittsburgh, who then brandished a gun and told Mader to shoot him, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Sunday. Williams was black.

Mader, a former Marine, told the paper he had used training from his time in the military and his situational training in the police academy to assess the situation.

“I told him, ‘Put down the gun,’ and he’s like, ‘Just shoot me.’ And I told him, ‘I’m not going to shoot you brother.’ Then he starts flicking his wrist to get me to react to it. I thought I was going to be able to talk to him and deescalate it. I knew it was a suicide-by-cop situation.”

Out of nowhere, two other Weirton officers arrived at the scene. The paper reported that Williams walked toward them waving his gun and one of them shot Williams in the back of the head, killing him.

Michael Folk, a republican for the West Virginia House of Delegates representing District 63, is in hot water after a tweet he posted Friday night.

The tweet, quoted as saying, "Hillary Clinton, you should be tried for treason, murder, and crimes against the US Constitution... then hung on the Mall in Washington, DC."

Some groups are calling for WV House of Delegates member Michael Folk to resign.

According to a press release from the Bulldog Finance Group, Jon Cooper, Chairman of the Democratic Coalition Against Trump stated: “Saturday morning the Democratic Coalition Against Trump organized a petition asking that United perform an investigation and at the very least do a psychological evaluation before Mr. Folk returns to the skies.  United Airlines then replied directly to the Democratic Coalition Against Trump with the message “We are appalled by comments advocating harm.  They do not represent United & we are looking into the matter further.”

The tweet has been taken down by someone other than Folk; he believes it was Twitter. Cont.

Couple Arrested After Trying To Sell Baby For Drugs

Story out of Fayette County, West Virginia:

According to Fayette County Sheriff's deputies, a couple went to a home on Chestnut Knob Road on May 28th and said they were trying to sell their baby for between $500 and $1,000.

Investigators believe the couple wanted to use the money from selling the baby to buy drugs.

The home the couple went to belonged to a woman who did not buy the baby, but took care of the infant for several hours.

Carolyn Redden lives approximately one mile from the couple, but says they did not know each other that well. She says she had never seen the mother before, but knew Jonathan Flint since he was a child.

Redden said after she refused to purchase the baby, they instead asked her to babysit while they walked five miles to a local convenience store. She says the couple did not return until the following day, after the baby was already in custody of child protective services.

Redden was the woman who dialed 911, ultimately alerting law enforcement of the situation. She says the baby would not stop crying and kept shaking.

According to the woman watching the baby, an EMS worker told her the infant may be suffering from drug withdrawal. Cont.

U.S. War Veteran Running For State Senate Is Brutally Beaten With Brass Knuckles

Story out of Charleston, West Virginia:

A war veteran running for a state senate seat on the Democratic ticket in West Virginia was brutally beaten Sunday at a cookout, leaving him with several broken bones and in need of surgery.

Richard Ojeda is still in the trauma unit at CAMC General Hospital in Charleston as of Monday morning, reports CBS affiliate WOWK-TV. He will have surgery later in the week.

Jonathan Porter of the Whitman's Creek area of Logan County has been arrested as the primary suspect in the incident, although no motive has been provided as of yet. Officials told WOWK-TV he is facing three felony charges.

Ojeda's sister, Kelly Ojeda, said they were all attending a political cookout Sunday in Logan County when the suspect asked Ojeda for a campaign bumper sticker.

Ojeda told WOWK that he doesn't remember much after he went to put the sticker on the suspect's vehicle. Witnesses said it was then that the suspect attacked the Iraq and Afghanistan veteran with brass knuckles, striking him eight or nine times, knocking him out. Cont. (Video)

Doctor Arrested After Being Caught Trading Pain Meds For Sex

Story out of Fairmont, West Virginia:

As of Thursday afternoon, Fairmont police had identified three women as victims of what they allege was a doctor’s scheme to trade pain prescriptions for sex.

And one of those women alleged she was victimized starting in 2013, or about two years after Fairmont’s Three Rivers Drug Task Force had asked the office of U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II to pursue charges against Dr. Eugenio Menez. That’s according to Fairmont Police Lt. Douglas Yost and Chief Steve Shine.

Ihlenfeld’s office didn’t consider the evidence strong enough to seek a federal indictment, even though Fairmont police thought it was, Yost said.

The investigation wasn’t dead, but it was stalled.

But about a month ago, the woman who alleged she’d been victimized starting in 2013 came forward. That, Shine said, re-energized the investigation.

If convicted, Menez could face 1-15 years, and a fine of up to $25,000, on each count, the magistrate explained. Cont.

Jail Bans Photos After Finding Them Soaked In Narcotics

Western Virginia Regional Jail inmates can no longer receive personal photos after officials intercepted pictures soaked in the narcotic-addiction treatment drug suboxone.

The pictures were saturated in a liquid form of the drug, Superintendent Bobby Russell said. Recipients of such photos can then chew them to absorb the contents.

Capt. Jim Murphy, who heads investigations at the New River Valley Regional Jail, said there are 10 outstanding cases so far this year related to suboxone. Though jail officials are trained to look for yellow or orange marks on paper that might indicate the drug, Murphy said in some cases it’s difficult to distinguish even white paper soaked in suboxone from uncontaminated letters. One document he saw recently — a coloring page that had not been filled in — bore few traces of tampering. Cont.

Thief Sentenced After Stealing 1 Dollar

Story out of Huntington, West Virginia:

A man who committed a $1 robbery was sentenced to spend at least six months to two years at the Anthony Center for youthful offenders after his 15-year prison sentence was suspended by Cabell Circuit Court Judge Chris Chiles.

John Bruce Chafin, 21, of Huntington, agreed to a Kennedy plea on a charge of first-degree robbery. He was originally charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and carrying a concealed weapon.

His arrest came after a Barboursville man told police a stranger approached him and another person at the corner of 4th Avenue and Hal Greer Boulevard, brandished a revolver and demanded the victim empty his wallet. That victim complied, but the wallet's contents yielded only $1, the records state.

Police confiscated the dollar bill, a jacket and a .38 special revolver as evidence, according to the police report. Cont.
