Ontario Man Is Jailed 30 Days For Improperly Removing Asbestos

Story out of Gananoque, Ontario:

A contractor who improperly removed asbestos from an eastern Ontario home and illegally dumped hundreds of pounds of asbestos-containing insulation has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Daniel Lane of Bolton, Ont., was convicted this week of nine counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the province's asbestos regulations, the Ministry of Labour said in a statement.

In August 2014, Lane's company HomeSeal was hired to remove asbestos-containing insulation from the attic of a Gananoque, Ont., home.

The ministry said Lane failed to seal the attic off from the rest of the house and ensure that he and his co-worker were wearing proper protective clothing.

The pair wore jeans and t-shirts during their work and their respirators were not properly tested beforehand. The homeowner and two other people were present while the work was being done, the ministry said.

A subsequent investigation involving Kingston police found that 13 large vacuum bags, containing several hundred pounds of asbestos-containing insulation, had also been dumped on private property.

The bags were not properly sealed and had no markings to warn the public about their contents, the ministry said in their statement. Cont.
