Woman Dies After Being Attacked By Fire Ants

Story out of Selma, Alabama:

It's a story so tragic, it’s almost hard to believe. A central Alabama family buried a mother and grandmother Thursday, at a double funeral.

The women passed away just a day apart, under rare and devastating circumstances.

The grief weighing on Sheila Rolan's shoulders is almost too much to bear.

“Losing a mother and a daughter together, back-to-back within a day, it’s a lot for a person to take on,” said Rolan.

Her daughter-in-law, Kalyn Rolan, was in Selma on May 20, making funeral arrangements for her mother, Roberta Lynn, who had died just the day before. Family members say she was on a haystack talking with someone on the phone when she was attacked by fire ants.

”The ants started coming out and getting all over her and she came off the haystack and my son said he grabbed her and put her on the ground, took her clothes off trying to help her to save her but he couldn't save her,” said Rolan.

According to family members, Kalyn is severely allergic to fire ants and started swelling to the point where she couldn't breathe.

“She died in my son's arms. I can only imagine what he's going through right now, you know, and then having to save her mother too,” said Rolan. Cont. (Video)

Vandals Deface 'Freedom Rock' Over Memorial Day Weekend

Story out of Cedar Falls, Iowa:

Police say someone vandalized the Freedom Rock, a monument dedicated to honoring veterans, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, over Memorial Day weekend.

"I think there's a lot of veterans especially happening on Memorial weekend who are extremely disheartened by the fact that somebody would not even contemplate what this means to those people," Mary Carlson, an area resident, told KWWL-TV.

More than just a tribute, the Freedom Rock is a powerful illustration of the cost of war. The words of honor are now illegible, barely able to make out.

Police say it happened overnight but because there are no surveillance cameras in that area, they don't know who did it. Cont.

Disabled Couple Evicted From Home After Police Find Small Amount Of Marijuana

Story out of Hanover, New Hampshire:

Getting caught with a small amount of marijuana is supposedly not a big deal anymore. Even in New Hampshire — the only New England state yet to decriminalize pot — first-time offenders just have to appear in court, plead guilty and pay a fine. Then they are free to move on with their lives.

Or at least that’s what many New Hampshire cops, prosecutors and lawmakers would like you to believe.

Three days after Lebanon police knocked on the door of their one-bedroom apartment and a search turned up a small amount of marijuana, the couple had another unannounced visitor. This time, the landlord’s director of property management had come to hand deliver an eviction notice.

Sevigny, 62, and Cardinale, 59, have until June 14 — five weeks from the date of their arrests — to get out, according to the eviction notice.

Sevigny and Cardinale are both disabled, and say they smoke pot for pain relief. She’s dealing with the debilitating effects of a traumatic brain injury incurred long ago in a car crash. He suffers from multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system for which there is no known cure. Cont.

Tech Billionaire Who Funded Gawker Lawsuit Once Lamented Women Getting The Vote

There is not one good side to this Gawker fiasco.

The secretive tech billionaire who recently admitted to funding a lawsuit meant to crush the media company Gawker is known for having some radical opinions. But in an essay published in 2009, he surprised many when he wrote that giving women the right to vote -- by constitutional amendment in 1920 -- was a blow to democracy.

Here's Thiel, writing on Cato Unbound, a blog affiliated with the libertarian think tank:

Since 1920, the vast increase in welfare beneficiaries and the extension of the franchise to women — two constituencies that are notoriously tough for libertarians — have rendered the notion of “capitalist democracy” into an oxymoron.

Thiel is well known in the tech world: he was an early funder of Facebook and sits on its board. His remarks on women earned the billionaire a lot of criticism at the time. That he also seemed to blame Social Security and other New Deal-era benefits for the decline of democracy -- a fairly common conservative and libertarian view -- got less attention. Cont.

Teacher Forces Minority Students To Take Unflattering Photos

Story out of Yucca Valley, California:

While many students are walking away with their yearbooks, some parents say they're concerned about a couple of pictures printed in the book.

Morongo Unified School District officials said the photos appear in the Senior Superlatives section of this year's yearbook. One photo, titled 'Teacher's Nightmare', shows a male student holding a gun, aimed at a book, and a female student holding a knife over a different book.

Another photo shows two students lighting a prop that is made to look like a bomb.

Superintendent Tom Baumgarten said he was concerned the first time he saw the photos after the school released the yearbook earlier this week.

One of the students, Beth Gonzales, now tells CBS Local 2 and News Channel 3's Kelley Moody, it wasn't her idea or any of the other students to use those props or pose in the photos, but rather, the teacher in charge of the yearbook. Cont.

"Should We Shoot That One Too?" - Michigan Police Face Lawsuit After Murdering Three Dogs

Story out of Detroit, Michigan:

Three months after Detroit paid $100,000 to settle a lawsuit filed because Detroit Police Officer Daryl Dawson fatally shot a chained-up dog named Babycakes, the Department is being sued for another dog massacre.

Nikita Smith and Kevin Thomas of Detroit say police raided their home during the service of a narcotics warrant and unnecessarily killed their three dogs, Debo, Mama and Smoke.

Photos submitted with the complaint show the bathroom, where one of the dogs was locked inside, drenched in blood.

The lawsuit says Smith, who was the only one home, heard police knock and told them, "Let me put my dogs down in the basement."

Police wrote in their report there was no response.

She "sequestered" Debo and Mama in the basement and "blocked the entryway," the lawsuit says. Smoke was locked in a bathroom.

When police entered, Debo got through "obstruction" keeping the dogs in the basement.

As Smith "reached down to her dog ... officers shot Debo multiple times" not far from Smith, the lawsuit claims.

The officers then "stormed down into the basement where the officers shot to death plaintiff's dog Mama, a pregnant female dog," the lawsuit says. "Mama was not barking or attacking" and "died in a pool of blood in the corner of the basement."

"Should we shoot that one too?" an officer allegedly said after cracking the bathroom door to verify the third dog was inside. Cont.

Japanese Parents Leave 7-Year-Old In Hokkaido Mountains As Punishment

Story out of Hokkaido, Japan:

The search continues Monday for a 7-year-old boy after his parents admitted to leaving him in the mountains as punishment and that he did not get lost during a hike as they first claimed, police said.

About 130 rescuers and police officers searched for a third day in mountains in Nanae, Hokkaido, after Yamato Tano-oka went missing Saturday, a police spokesman said.

His parents originally told the police that he got lost while the family was walking in the area to pick wild vegetables.

The boy’s 44-year-old father, Takayuki Tano-oka, eventually told the police they left the boy in the mountains on the way home from a park after scolding him for throwing stones at cars on a nearby road. Cont.

Fed Up Student Hits Bigoted Street Preacher Upside The Head With Bat

Arrested for assault... And marijuana possession, why not. Story out of Glendale, Arizona:

How far is too far when it comes to stopping hate speech?

An attack outside a west Valley high school shows the lengths one young woman went through to stop what she considered "hate speech."

Nineteen-year-old Tabitha Brubaker's target was controversial preacher Brother Dean Saxton, who has spent years demonstrating outside Valley high schools and colleges as well as busy public events.

He's known for denouncing homosexuality and holding signs telling woman they deserve rape for not being true Christians.

Brother Dean posted YouTube video of his demonstration at Apollo High School earlier this month. In the video he admits he is often confronted and yelled at. He uses a megaphone to tell students they're going to hell.

After several minutes, while he’s debating with one man on the video, you hear him being hit as he's ambushed from behind. He was able to walk away clearly bleeding from a gash on his head.

Though you never see Brubaker in the video, police arrested her for felony assault as well as marijuana possession. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Disappointment For Student Denied Cap And Gown After Leukemia Fight

Story out of Mesa, Arizona:

The sign outside Dobson High School reminded everyone that graduation was just hours away.  At the east end of the grounds, rows of chairs have been neatly set for the class of 2016. Enough seats except for one, the one for class president, Stephen Dwyer, 18.

A couple of days ago, Dwyer posted a thorough, passionate timeline of events of his battle with leukemia, enduring a bone marrow transplant and then finding the strength to make it back on campus for his senior year. He wrote: "I lost a lot of high school memories and now I'm losing the final one."

Unfortunately, as his recovery progressed, the clock on his senior year ran out and he came up two and a half credits short to graduate with his class. His appeal to the Mesa Public Schools district board to allow him to simply walk across the stage with his class was denied. Among classmates, the news was met with bitter disappointment. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

"Like Something From A Police Comedy” - Cops Take Forty-Three Tries To Knock Down Drug Dealers Door

The criminal had enough time to not only flush his stash but to plunger it back up and take a few hits. Story out of London, England:

Cops took Forty-three tries to break down a suspected drug dealer’s front door.

Bemused neighbours filmed on their mobiles and chuckled as at least 10 officers spent more than two minutes trying to force their way in during a dawn raid.

A crowd gathered as the cops huffed and puffed with a battering ram before the terraced house’s uPVC door eventually gave way.

An onlooker said: “It was extraordinary. You half expected them to just give up and go back to the nick.

“It was like something from a police comedy.”

Officers are normally expected to take as few as four or five attempts to break down a door - or risk losing the element of surprise and allowing criminals to dispose of vital evidence.

The bizarre scene unfolded when officers scrambled to a home in Abbey Wood, south east London at 5.30am on Wednesday.

The video was uploaded to Facebook by local Paul Dubens, sparking merciless ribbing of the Metropolitan Police officers involved. Cont. (Video)

Man Dies After Being Stung Over 1,000 Times During Bee Attack

Story out of Mesa, Arizona:

Alex Bestler and a friend were on a morning hike in Usery Mountain Park in Arizona when, without provocation, a large swarm of hostile bees attacked.

Bestler, 23, was overtaken by the aggressive bees and stung more than 1,000 times, authorities said Thursday.

Several people attempted to help Bestler as he lay on the ground, covered in bees, but the would-be rescuers were driven back by the angry swarm.

Maricopa County Sheriff Sgt. Allen Romer finally used a utility vehicle to get close. He was “able to load Alex onto the UTV and remove him from the scene, still covered with bees, and a swarm pursuing,” according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Bestler was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Cont.

Delayed Video Game Leads To Death Threats

Geek culture doesn't seem to have this problem, just saying. I'm a gamer, but don't flip out over delays... or women... or whatever stupid shit gamer's are soiling themselves over.

When No Man's Sky was officially delayed to August last week, many were disappointed. It means we'll have to wait another two months before we can have procedurally generated space adventures, and that's enough to make anyone a little bit upset, including myself. Still, most are capable of accepting that delays can happen, and that it's better to have a delayed game than a broken one.

Some people were still very angry, though. They were so angry that Hello Games received death threats following the announcement. That's not a sensible way to demonstrate one's emotions, but on the internet, where very few things are sensible and nice and polite, it is something that happens scarily often.

"I have received loads of death threats this week," Hello Games' Sean Murray tweeted after last week's announcement. "but don't worry, Hello Games now looks like the house from Home Alone." Cont.

Eagles Are Being Trained To Take Down Drones

It's not fair to sent a Eagle to defeat a birdbrained machine. Story out of Katwijk, Netherlands:

Its wings beating against a gathering breeze, the eagle moves gracefully through a cloudy sky, then swoops, talons outstretched, on its prey below.

The target, however, is not another bird but a small drone, and when the eagle connects, there is a metallic clunk. With the device in its grasp, the bird of prey returns to the ground.

At a disused military airfield in the Netherlands, hunting birds like the eagle are being trained to harness their instincts to help combat the security threats stemming from the proliferation of drones.

The birds of prey learn to intercept small, off-the-shelf drones — unmanned aerial vehicles — of the type that can pose risks to aircraft, drop contraband into jails, conduct surveillance or fly dangerously over public events. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

"You Can't Legislate Against Human Stupidity" - Australian MP Comments On Woman Feared Dead After Crocodile Attack

Story out of Cairns, Australia:

A 46-year-old woman is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming with a friend on a beach in far North Queensland in Australia.

North Queensland member for parliament, Warren Entsch, who represents the region, said the victim should be blamed for the attack, not the crocodile.

"You can't legislate against human stupidity," Entsch said on Monday, noting that Thornton Beach lies next to a creek where tourism operators run crocodile-spotting tours. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

They're telling Canuck he's not in trouble, they just want to talk to him. Story out of Vancouver, BC:

Canuck the crow, Vancouver's most notorious bird, is being accused of flying away with a knife from a crime scene.

The crow has quite a reputation in Vancouver and its antics are regularly chronicled on social media, including a dedicated Facebook page that has a profile photo of the bird holding a knife in its beak.

Earlier on Tuesday, police had shot a man near Hastings and Cassiar streets. They were called to the scene of a car engulfed in flames. When they arrived, police said, they were confronted by a man with a knife.

Shots were fired and the man was arrested.

Baked Man Mistakes Dog Bite For Gun Shot Wound, Calls Police

Don't worry, he's since forgotten all about it. Story out of Waco, Texas:

A Texas man called police on Thursday believing he was shot in the left buttock while sitting on the porch.

When an officer from the Groesbeck Police Department, just east of Waco, responded they found the victim had been smoking marijuana and his dog actually bit him. He wasn't actually shot.

"It Was F*cking Ridiculous" - Republicans Walk Out On Member Ranting About Homosexuality

Something doesn't add up... if you're so outraged about crazy, why continue to act crazy?

A House Republican on Thursday accused a number of his own GOP colleagues of committing a sin because they voted in favor of an anti-discrimination LGBT proposal, according to The Hill newspaper.

To begin a Republican policy meeting, Rep. Rick Allen, R-Georgia, read a Bible passage aloud that condemns homosexuality, the report said. People inside the meeting told The Hill that Allen suggested his colleagues violated Christian tenets because they backed an LGBT protection provision.

"It was f***ing ridiculous," one GOP lawmaker told The Hill.

According to the report, several Republicans walked out of the room.

Democrats have been trying to attach an amendment to spending bills that would bar federal contracts to companies that discriminate against LGBT employees.

Last week, the amendment failed only seconds after it looked like it had the votes to pass. Democrats accused GOP leaders of twisting arms to ensure that the proposal would fail and the House erupted into chaos. This week, the amendment passed, but the spending bill it was attached to failed because of Republican opposition to the LGBT protection amendment. Cont.

“I’m Not Going To Give It Up” - Man Vows To Continue To Stalk Reporter After His 15 Year Probation Sentence Is Over

Story out of Darby, Pennsylvania:

An Upper Darby man who entered an open plea to stalking and terroristic threats Wednesday indicated he still intends to contact his victim when his probation is up – in 15 years.

“I’m not going to give it up,” Christopher Nilan told Judge Gregory Mallon during sentencing. “I don’t do that. I’m not going to give it up. I want to be with her. I’m the only person who can protect her.”

Nilan, 32, of the unit block of Park Avenue, was arrested in January after his desire to date a member of CBS 3’s “Eyewitness News” team turned to obsession, according to police.

The fixation began in November, when Nilan approached a male reporter about contacting the victim. That reporter directed Nilan to look up her contact information on the CBS 3 website. The reporter also said he later received a letter from Nilan requesting more information that included his phone number.

Another witness reported receiving two phone calls from Nilan Jan. 6 and 12 asking to speak with the victim. A third witness reported calling Nilan after getting word of his continued attempts to contact the victim.

“She advised him employees are not encouraged to have relationships with viewers,” according to the affidavit. “Nilan was persistent and kept asking to speak with the victim and he wanted to meet her. Nilan claimed to be a former firefighter and a ‘good guy.’ He wanted to protect the victim from bad guys when she was not working and wanted to get a drink and dinner at an Italian restaurant near the Upper Darby police department. Nilan further stated he lives in an apartment nearby and he wanted to take the victim there as well. Nilan claimed to have personal things he needed to share with the victim that he could not tell (the witness).” Cont.

German Opposition Leader Belted With Cake Over Immigrant Stance

"Single" And "Emotional" - Chinese Analyst Thinks Taiwan's New Female President Unfit To Lead

Because there's nothing emotional about throwing a temper tantrum over something you don't like.

Taiwan's new president Tsai Ing-wen practises "emotional" and "extreme" politics because she is a single woman without children, a member of China's organisation overseeing relations with the island has said.

The scathing attack on the newly inaugurated leader came from Wang Weixing, a military analyst and a board member of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits.

"As a single female politician, she is unburdened by love, and lacks the constraint of family or concern for children," Wang wrote in the International Herald Leader newspaper, which is under China's state news agency Xinhua.

"In political style and strategy, often she tends to be emotional, personal, and extreme. In terms of political tricks, she considers strategy less, tactical details more, and short-term goals are paramount, while long-term goals are less taken into account."

The attack came days after Tsai, Taiwan's first female president, took the oath of office at the presidential palace in Taipei. Cont.

Cop Delivers Pizza After Delivery Driver Gets Into Accident

Oh, just tip the cop, yo. Story out of Lincoln Park, Michigan:

They say there is never a cop when you need one.

Well, a couple people in Lincoln Park would disagree: A pizza delivery driver and the guy waiting for the pie.

It was a late-afternoon traffic accident which left a Jet's Pizza delivery driver a little banged up.

"He had some scratches and some scrapes. He took a pretty good impact out there," said Officer Joe Sparks, of the Lincoln Park Police Department.

Sparks, a 16-year veteran of the force, handled the crash and sent the driver to the hospital. He then realized he had another situation: a pizza in need of delivery still sitting in the back seat of the car.

"I grabbed the pizza. I checked the address. I see it's only a few blocks away, figured I'd just go ahead and deliver it. I knew the person was waiting for their food," said Sparks.

He was right. Carl Babik had called the pizza place to find out what happened to his double pepperoni and cheese. He never expected an armed delivery.

Babik said he normally tips the regular delivery driver $5. So, did he tip the delivery officer?

"Who would tip a cop? I mean, come on," he said, laughing. Cont. (Video)

San Francisco 49ers Donate $75,000 To Help Repeal North Carolina's Anti Trans Bill

Talk about out of left field (no, wait, that's baseball.) Still pretty cool.

San Francisco 49ers is making a stand against North Carolina and its new anti-LGBT bill — not just with words but with action too.

The famous football team has just donated $75,000 to North Carolina’s largest LGBT advocacy group, Equality North Carolina, in support of the repeal of the state’s recently passed House Bill 2 (HB2).

‘The San Francisco 49ers are deeply concerned about North Carolina’s recently-enacted House Bill 2, which overturned protections for LGBT people and sanctioned discrimination across the state,’ said 49ers CEO Jed York in a statement released on Tuesday. ‘HB2 does not reflect the values of our organization, of our country, or the majority of North Carolinians.’ Cont.

Father, Son Kept 13-Year-Old Shackled In A Basement For A Year

Story out of Toledo, Ohio:

A 13-year-old girl rescued late Wednesday from a North Toledo home where she said she was kept shackled in a basement for as long as a year is now in foster care, along with two other children taken from the house, authorities said.

The girl was rescued when she managed to uncuff herself with a spare key and run away after the suspects both went for a jog in a park, according to a Toledo police report.

The girl was discovered by a woman who called police when she saw the girl walking in the 700 block of Water Street about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. The woman told police the girl was carrying several bags and looked like a runaway. The woman told police that she went outside and convinced the victim to come indoors with her.

Once inside, the girl told the woman that her mother had left her and her two siblings and went to Las Vegas. She then told the woman her dad had taken her in but she had run away "because she gets in trouble for wetting the bed," for which he "puts handcuffs on her ankles" and "makes her sleep in the basement." Cont.

Man Physically Assaulted After Taking 5-Year-Old Into Men's Washroom

No no, the emotional damage will come from going into the men's washroom, not the freak throwing punches. Story out of Clinton, Ohio

A trip to the men’s restroom at a Walmart in Clinton quickly escalated into a full-fledged struggle when one man criticized another for bringing his 5-year-old daughter with him.

Christopher Adams said his 7-year-old son, Kyler, and 5-year-old daughter, Emery, both had to go when the family visited the store Sunday to buy blinds and storage bins, so he took them both inside the men’s restroom in the back of the store.

“This guy walks in and goes to the bathroom, the urinal,” Adams recalled Tuesday. “Then he just, like, turns to me and starts freaking out, dropping the ‘F-bomb,’ and what he was freaking out about was that my daughter was in the men’s bathroom.”

Adams said the man told him it was “inappropriate,” and soon began to push him after Adams gave him a terse response.

The father said he tried to usher his kids away from the man.

“When I turned back around, I got sucker-punched right here,” Adams said, pointing to his left eye, which still was bruised.

From there, Adams said he was punched in the face and kicked in the knee multiple times during the struggle in which the dad ultimately defended himself, forcing the man out of the restroom. Cont. (Video)

Glen Beck Guest Asks: 'Which Patriot Will Assassinate President Trump?'

Talk-radio host Glenn Beck has already had at least one visit from the Secret Service this election cycle over perceived threats on the life of GOP front runner Donald Trump made on his show, and he may be in store for another.

During Wednesday’s broadcast Beck interviewed best-selling suspense author Brad Thor and the pair discussed their concerns Trump, if elected, would abuse his presidential authority with little chance of being stopped by Congress. Their “hypothetical” solution sounded suspiciously like insurrection, at least, and assassination, in the extreme. It certainly was extra-legal.

“I am about to suggest something very bad,” said Thor. “It is a hypothetical I am going to ask as a thriller writer.

“With the feckless, spineless Congress we have, who will stand in the way of Donald Trump overstepping his constitutional authority as president? If Congress won’t remove him from office, what patriot will step up and do that if, if, he oversteps his mandate as president, his constitution-mandated authority as president, I should say.

“If he oversteps that, how do we get him out of office? And I don’t think there is a legal means available. I think it will be a terrible, terrible position the American people will be in to get Trump out of office, because you won’t be able to do it through Congress.” Cont. (Audio)

Pathetic Pakistani Hospital Lets GunShot Trans Patient Die Over Semantics

When a 23-year-old transgendeContainstivist was shot six times by a gang on Sunday night in northern Pakistan, other members of her community rushed her to a hospital. Violent attacks on transgender people aren't rare in Pakistan, or across South Asia and beyond for that matter, and the group young Alesha coordinated for, Trans Action, had long campaigned for greater protection. In Facebook posts, Trans Action said the gang that shot Alesha specifically targets members of the transgender community, and sometimes sexually assaults them while recording the crime.

In retrospect, that Alesha faced the same neglect and discrimination at the hospital, and ultimately died from it, seems a sad foregone conclusion. Distraught colleagues of hers documented their attempts to get her treated on social media.

For an hour, while Alesha bled, doctors couldn't decide whether to admit her to the men's or women's ward, according to Trans Action. When they finally decided on the men's ward, Trans Action protested, and had her shifted to the women's ward, where other women apparently complained.

Then the taunts began, Trans Action said. One doctor allegedly asked a Trans Action volunteer for her telephone number and how much she charges for a dancing party. Another was reportedly asked if her breasts were real. Another asked if the women from Trans Action just danced or also "perform sex," according to the group.

She succumbed to her injuries Wednesday morning. Cont.

School Board Candidate Carried Out Of Meeting By Police After Discussing 'Erect Penises'

Story out of Brevard County, Florida:

School Board candidate Dean Paterakis was charged with disrupting a school function and resisting an officer without violence Tuesday after he was ejected from a school board meeting dealing with LGBT issues. The incident was caught on video.

Paterakis was released on $750 bond before midnight on the two misdemeanor charges.

Paterakis was asked by School Board chairman Andy Ziegler to step away from the speakers' podium after making what Ziegler said were inappropriate remarks. A school district security officer asked him to leave, and Paterakis refused. Sheriff's deputies then stepped in to ask Paterakis to leave, according to a statement from sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Dave Jacobs.

"Paterakis then refused several lawful orders to leave the premises by uniformed deputies,'' Jacobs wrote in a statement released to the media. Some people in the crowd at a graduation ceremony at California State University, Fullerton, shouted at the commencement speaker after she talked about presidential candidate Donald Trump and gave a brief section of her address in Spanish.

“It’s really sad,” the commencement speaker, Maria Elena Salinas, an anchor for Spanish language broadcast network Univision, said Tuesday. “And it’s a testament to what has happened in our country. Our country is really divided.”

Salinas gave the keynote address to the entire university Sunday morning, was presented with an honorary doctorate, and spoke some words in Spanish to the parents of graduates. The student body is 40 percent Hispanic, and she felt the speech was well-received; several students thanked her afterward for addressing their parents in their native language. "American Sniper" Chris Kyle Lied About Military Record

Face it, the guy had a problem with the truth.

No American has been more associated with the Navy SEAL mystique than Chris Kyle, known as the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. His bestselling autobiography, American Sniper — a story of honor, glory, and quiet heroism — has sold more than a million copies. The movie adaptation became the highest-grossing war film in American history.

“All told,” Kyle wrote in his book, “I would end my career as a SEAL with two Silver Stars and five Bronze [Stars], all for valor.”

But Kyle, who was murdered by a fellow military veteran several years after leaving the Navy, embellished his military record, according to internal Navy documents obtained by The Intercept. During his 10 years of military service and four deployments, Kyle earned one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars with Valor, a record confirmed by Navy officials.

Kyle was warned at least once before American Sniper was published that its description of his medal count was wrong, according to one current Navy officer, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak about the case. As Kyle’s American Sniper manuscript was distributed among SEALs, one of his former commanders, who was still on active duty, advised Kyle that his claim of having two Silver Stars was false, and he should correct it before his book was published. Cont.

Thieves Steal 4-Year-Old's Hearing Aid

Story out of Columbus, Ohio:

Thieves in Columbus got more than technology when they broke in a vehicle last week.

They literally stole a young boy's ability to hear. They took the device that allows him to hear, through a cochlear implant.

When you think of a crime victim, you probably don't picture four-year-old Sora Coate. He's a charismatic and curious little boy who loves to play and smile and laugh.

"He's just the best thing in my life," said Sora's mom, Laura Coate. "He's deaf in both ears. He was a year old when I found out. But he's always happy and when he's happy, I'm happy."

Coate says her son is not only deaf, but also autistic. Unwittingly last week, his disability made him a target for thieves.

"He was given the gift to be able hear earlier that day and that night, they all got taken," Coate said. "My heart is broken for him." Cont. (Video)

Errors In Washington State Penal System Lead Prisoners To Serve More Time

I'm sure they're fine with it.

Staff error resulted in 152 federal inmates being freed after their correct release dates between 2009 and 2014, including three who spent more than an extra year behind bars, according to a report released Tuesday by the Justice Department watchdog.

The inspector general report counted a total of 4,340 Bureau of Prisons inmates who received "untimely" releases during those years.

Of those cases, 157 were classified by the BOP as due to "staff errors," such as employees who misapplied credit for time served, the report stated. Just five of those mistakes led to early releases; in the rest, inmates served more time than they should have, with one prisoner serving roughly three additional years. Cont.
