Theater Accidentally Plays Trailer For R-Rated Cartoon In Front Of 'Finding Dory' Crowd

Story out of Concord, California:

A California audience settling into a movie theatre to watch the family-friendly hit Finding Dory got quite a shock when an expletive-laden trailer for another animated movie, Sausage Party, turned up onscreen.

The incident earlier this month at Brenden Theatre in Concord prompted an apology from the cinema chain.

"Playing that trailer was a one-time honest mistake by a theatre manager moving screens around in an effort to accommodate several large, last-minute groups wanting to see Dory," Walter Eichinger, vice-president of operations for Brenden Theatres, said in a statement to U.S. media.

"In the rush, one hard-working manager clicked the wrong movie. It was caught soon, but not until that trailer was played. We regret it, apologize for it and we are not happy that it happened. We fully realize that this trailer is not appropriate for Dory and we would never schedule something like that."

Sausage Party, slated for release in late summer and billed as "the first R-rated CG animated movie," follows a sausage that discovers the horror of what happens to groceries after they leave the supermarket. Cont.

Firefighter Shot Dead While Passing Around, Pointing Gun With Friends During Drunken Night

Story out of Stoneham, Massachusetts:

A Stoneham firefighter was shot and killed in a horrific incident late Tuesday night.

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said the firefighter, David Atherton, 24, was drinking with 23-year-old Patrick Riccardi-O’Connor in a home on Congress Street and that the two were “passing a gun back and forth pointing it at each other” around 11:10 p.m.

“It appears the fatal shooting may have been an unintended consequence of this behavior,” Meghan Kelly, a spokesperson for the D.A., said in a statement Wednesday.

Atherton, who lived in Stoneham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Riccardi-O’Connor, also of Stoneham, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm.

Prosecutors said Riccardi-O’Connor was funneling beer before shooting his friend, and had also “ingested” a bullet. The two had been recording videos of them fooling around with the gun throughout the night, prosecutors said.

According to court documents, Riccardi-O’Connor initially lied to police, saying Atherton was pointing the gun at his chest and shot himself.

But while at the police department, officers say Riccardi-O’Connor admitted the gun had gone off when the two were passing it back and forth. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Hate Crime Up 57% In England After Brexit

Here are just a few instances of Brits showing the world their true, not so Union Jacks. England is royally screwed (no pun intended).

The number of alleged hate crimes reported to a police website have risen by 57% after the UK voted to leave the European Union.

The 85 reports to True Vision between Thursday and Sunday came as the Prime Minister called for racially-motivated attacks in the wake of the vote must be "stamped out".

Gwent Police confirmed it is investigating an incident directly linked with the referendum result and police in Wiltshire said they are investigating a potentially racist attack on a Polish woman in Salisbury on Friday.

As part of a wide-ranging speech to Parliament on Monday afternoon, David Cameron said: "In the past few days, we have seen despicable graffiti smeared on a Polish community centre and heard verbal abuse shouted at individuals who are members of ethnic minorities.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he had asked Scotland Yard - Britain's largest force - to be "extra vigilant" for any rise in cases. Cont.

"Back To Africa" - Trump Supporter Posts Racist Slurs Using Innocent Retired National Guard's Profile Picture

A pro-Trump racist social media post from an "Army Reserve medic" made the internet rounds last week, but Army officials say the woman linked to the post is a victim of identity theft.
The alleged racist “Terra Simmons” does not exist and the account is a fake of unknown origins, according to Army Reserve spokesman Capt. Eric Connor.

The profile pictures, however, are real. The woman, a former member of the National Guard's military police, had her identity stolen for the purposes of the racist post, Connor said. Her name was altered.

Contrary to the forged post, the woman never served in the Reserve nor did she work for Amazon, nor did she set foot in South Carolina, Connor said.

“Somebody took a photo of a solider no longer in the military and appropriated it for a fake post,” Connor told Army Times. "If it had been someone in the Army Reserve … we would have definitely taken a serious look at the matter. Given that it was a bogus post, we didn’t have to go that far."

The post, which was littered with racial slurs, suggested that “When Trump gets elected,” he would cut food stamps and send black people "back to Africa."

Quickly, screenshots of the Facebook post and the apparently hijacked pictures spread through social media. A number of concerned readers sent the images to Army Times.

The Army did take notice, but the National Guard and Army Reserve could not find “Terra Simmons” in any database of current or former employees, Connor said.

They soon identified the real individual, a woman who served in the Illinois National Guard from 2007 to 2014. While she declined comment for this article, Connor said the woman was disturbed to have her face associated with such vile comments. Cont.

YouTube "Star" Charged After Making False Claims About Hate Crime, Injured Self In Jail Cell

I was going to post this story a few days ago, but held off because something didn't pass muster, and now we know. But don't worry, he's a YouTube star, his channel will now be all about mental illness, blah, blah, blah. Story out of Los Angeles, California:

A gay YouTube personality was charged Wednesday with making a false police report after saying he was beaten outside a Los Angeles gay nightclub.

Calum McSwiggan, 26, posted an Instagram photo Monday of himself lying in a hospital bed with a bandage. In the caption, he described being beaten by three men in the city of West Hollywood. “With three broken teeth and six stitches in my forehead, I’ve never felt so terrified to be a gay man in the public eye,” he wrote.

Officials from the LA County Sheriff’s Department were unable to substantiate the assault, according to a statement to the LA Times. McSwiggan was subsequently arrested for allegedly vandalizing a car. Officials say he injured himself in his jail cell and was taken to the hospital. Cont.

After 6 Children Killed, Ikea Recalls Millions Of Dressers

Ikea Canada is recalling millions of dressers over concerns the furniture could topple over, following the deaths of six children in the United States.

The list of recalled dressers spans more than a dozen models including Malm, Hemnes, and Brusali, and includes dressers manufactured after January, 2002. The full list of affected dressers is on the Ikea Canada website.

Customers are being advised to immediately tether the dressers to a wall or return the furniture to an Ikea outlet for a refund.

Ikea says it is also working with Health Canada and will now only sell dressers that meet North American standards on “free-standing stability” set by ASTM, a group that sets standards for thousands of consumer products sold around the world.

16 reports of incidents involving Malm dressers that resulted in the deaths of two toddlers and four other serious injuries in the United States. A third child in Minnesota died in February, 2016, after a Malm dresser tipped onto him and pinned him against his bed. Cont. (Video)

Two Men Arrested After Throwing Eggs At African American Woman While Shouting Racial Slurs

Story out of St. Louis, Missouri:

Police arrested two men Friday night after they were reported throwing eggs and shouting racial slurs at a woman waiting at a bus stop.

The suspects were identified as Jesse Reed, and David Ragain, Both men are 30 years old.

"These weren't two white teenagers on a joy ride," said St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson.

Reed and Ragain face charges of "assault motivated by discrimination," a third-degree felony

According to police, the two men shouted slurs and threw eggs at an African-American woman waiting at a bus stop on South Grand Boulevard near Chippewa Street around 11 p.m. Friday. Charges say other African-Americans waiting at bus stops along the same route also reported being struck by eggs within minutes of the woman being hit.

Authorities found the men by using video surveillance and license plate scanners to trace a white minivan police said was involved. Ragain and Reed were in the minivan. Cont.

Body Parts Discovered Near Olympic Beach Volleyball Site In Rio

Olympic mobsters: "How you going to compete without a foot?" Story out of Rio De Janeiro:

With just 36 days to go before the Rio Olympics kick off, the situation in the host city just went from bad to worse.

A beach goer Wednesday discovered human body parts that had washed up on the shore, right in front of the Olympic Beach Volleyball Arena on Rio's famed Copacabana beach.

A dismembered foot and another body part still unidentified was found, according to Andre Luiz, an officer of the Military Police. Police believe the victim was a woman or young adult.

Although the circumstances surrounding the person's death are unknown, it is another embarrassing blow to the host country -- already reeling from financial problems, a mishap-prone Olympic torch and an outbreak of the mosquito-borne Zika virus. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Woman Successfully Sues Microsoft After Windows 10 Hurts Her Business

Don't worry, after the free campaign is over they will take down that constant reminder to upgrade... just kidding, it's stinking Microsoft they will replace it with an ad telling you to pay for it.

With about a month left for many PC users to upgrade to Windows 10 at no charge, Microsoft is being criticized for its aggressive — some say too aggressive — campaign to get people to install the new operating system.

A few days after Microsoft released Windows 10 to the public last year, Teri Goldstein’s computer started trying to download and install the new operating system.

The update, which she says she didn’t authorize, failed. Instead, the computer she uses to run her Sausalito, Calif., travel-agency business slowed to a crawl. It would crash, she says, and be unusable for days at a time.

“I had never heard of Windows 10,” Goldstein said. “Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update.”

When outreach to Microsoft’s customer support didn’t fix the issue, Goldstein took the software giant to court, seeking compensation for lost wages and the cost of a new computer.

She won. Last month, Microsoft dropped an appeal and Goldstein collected a $10,000 judgment from the company. Cont.

Man Dies In His Walk-In Freezer

Story out of Thornbury, England:

The bakery worker, in his fifties, is believed to have collapsed and died in the early hours of this morning after walking into the huge sub-zero storage area at the back of the store to find something.

When he didn’t return, colleagues went to look for him and found him unconscious on the floor at around 1.22am.

They raised the alarm, but police and paramedics could not help him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘He was in the main walk-in food freezer out the back of the store.

‘He worked in the bakery section. No-one knows how long he had been in the freezer before he was found. Another member of staff found the body and raised the alarm.’

It is understood the man was not locked or trapped in the freezer, but had collapsed while working inside at the store in Thornbury, Gloucestershire. Cont.

"You Loaded Those Bullets With Hatred" - Orlando City Commissioner Chastises Republicans

Story out of Orlando, Florida:

Orlando’s openly lesbian city commissioner, Patty Sheehan, a formidable long-time activist for LGBT equality, has been in the national spotlight for the past two weeks fighting to make sure the media didn’t take the focus off of the victims of the mass-shooting at the Pulse nightclub in her city: largely LGBT Latinx in a popular queer nightspot.

In an interview with me on SiriusXM Progress, she said she’s angry that many GOP politicians wouldn’t even say the words “LGBT” or “gay,” and were thereby attempting to straightwash the targets of the attack. She also has a message for those GOP politicians who both have voted against LGBT rights and voted against gun safety measures, yet expressed sympathy for the victims.

“Marco Rubio, the senator from Florida, walked on our blood-stained streets with people from the Hispanic community,” Sheehan observed of Rubio, who has been a vocal opponent of LGBT rights and even promised if elected president to try to overturn the Supreme Court’s historic marriage equality ruling. “And he went right back to Washington – one of the few times he actually showed up for work – and voted against sensible gun legislation.”

“My governor couldn’t say the word ‘gay’ — until he was called out on it,” Sheehan commented, then broadened her critique to other Republicans. “And I’ve called a lot of them out on it. I said, ‘How dare you come here to my city – our city – and stand in front of the microphone and take up space….You loaded those bullets with hatred, as far as I’m concerned.’” Cont.

Sex Offender Spits Blood At Victim At Sentencing Hearing

Story out of Newark, New Jersey:

Calling him “every parent’s worst nightmare,” a federal judge on Monday sentenced an online predator to life in prison for coercing two young girls from West Milford to engage in sex acts and then threatening to destroy their lives.

Midway through a nearly four-hour hearing in Newark, Clifford W. Wares, 43, of Warwick, N.Y., suddenly lunged at one of the victims, spitting a mouthful of blood as she walked past him after giving a heart-wrenching victim’s impact statement.

Three U.S. marshals, positioned behind Wares, pounced on the shackled defendant and wrestled him to the floor. Within moments they had subdued him and placed a netted hood over his head.

Wares’ attorney, Thomas Ambrosio, said his client apparently bit the inside of his mouth and then spit blood as the teenager was passing between the defense and prosecution tables. Wares had staged a similar cheek-biting outburst prior to his May trial, which he subsequently elected to watch via a video feed to his cell because of fears that he could not control himself. Cont.

Former College Student Found Guilty Of Killing Baby At Sorority House

Story out of Zanesville, Ohio:

A former college student accused of giving birth in a sorority house bathroom and killing her baby girl by disposing of her in a trash bag was found guilty of murder on Friday.

A jury issued a quick verdict finding 21-year-old Emile Weaver guilty of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors argued that Weaver purposefully caused the death of her newborn daughter after giving birth in a bathroom at the Delta Gamma Theta sorority at Muskingum University on April 22, 2015. They said the baby girl died from asphyxiation after Weaver put her in a plastic trash bag and left it outside the sorority house.

Weaver testified Friday that she had been in denial about the pregnancy and thought the baby was already dead when she discarded the trash bag.

She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but a judge ruled that she was mentally competent. Cont.

Saudi Gamer Using Real Name 'Jihad' Banned From PlayStation Network

A 26-year-old Saudi gamer says his PlayStation Network account was locked for using the word Jihad—which also happens to be his first name.

Jihad Al Mofadda, whose story shot to the front page of Reddit yesterday, said that Sony banned his account on June 7. At first, PlayStation customer support offered to switch his PSN name to something else. Then, he says, after a few days of silence, a different representative reviewed the ticket and decided to ban the account entirely, preventing Al Mofadda from accessing his stats, trophies, and all of the digital games he’s purchased. After his story exploded, Al Mofadda was able to get in touch with a Sony representative again, but he was unable to keep his original handle.

In an e-mail to Kotaku, Al Mofadda said he’s had the account iJihaD since 2008 or 2009. “It’s really weird,” he said. “Not sure why the inconsistency in solving gamers’ issues. They seem to cherrypick whom to offer a solution and whom to revoke it.” Al Mofadda also provided Kotaku with a photo of his passport and copies of his e-mail exchanges with PlayStation customer support.

This afternoon, after speaking with us and other news outlets, Al Mofadda said Sony again contacted him as a result of all this publicity, this time offering to let him switch handles. “Unfortunately, they will force me to change the name, losing trophies and friends but keeping purchases,” Al Mofadda told me in an e-mail. “As they still can’t accept my name. I wish it was a nicer solution. Especially since their renaming system does a lot of harm on a persons account.” Cont.

Trump Hires Communications Director Who Called Him #SleazyTrump On Twitter

Donald Trump is having trouble putting together a full-fledged presidential campaign. Trump has a staff of little more than 70 people, compared to more than 700 for Hillary Clinton.

The problem: many experienced Republican operatives do not want to work for him. Trump was able to fill a key role. Jason Miller, a senior communications adviser for Ted Cruz, signed up to be Trump’s communications director.

Before Miller signed on, however, he had some cleaning up to do. Miller deleted dozens of harshly anti-Trump tweets from his Twitter account, many of them authored just a few weeks ago.

ThinkProgress was able to recover cached versions of Miller’s deleted anti-Trump tweets:

- "Unbelievable watching this Trumpbot on @cnn tell Cruz to be classy. Um, Trump described his avoiding VD's as his own Vietnam. #SleazyTrump"

- "Donald Trump is the Carl Lewis of flip-flopping I have literally never seen anyone move with such speed."

Google CEO Social Media Hacked Briefly By Company Claiming To Be Testing Security

Google CEO Sundar Pichai may want to change his passwords today. (Chewy 123)

An account belonging to Pichai on Quora, a question-and-answer social network, appeared to have been briefly hijacked on Sunday by OurMine. The same group claimed to have accessed Mark Zuckerberg's Twitter account earlier this month.

After gaining access to Pichai's Quora account, the group was able to send linked tweets to Pichai's Twitter account, where the CEO has more than half a million followers.

Hacking high-profile targets seems like an unorthodox way to get business attention, but that appears to be OurMine's strategy.

"We are just testing your security," the hackers wrote from Pichai's account. They directed readers to learn more about OurMine's cyber-security services for hire. A spokesperson for the group told The Next Web:

"We are just testing people security [sic], we never change their passwords, we did it because there is other hackers can hack them and change everything." Cont.

Cops Sue After Discovering Body Cameras Recorded Private Moments

"Your honor, the video in question is not an accurate depiction of my client's diction". Story out of Round Lake Park, Illinois:

Police officers in north suburban Round Lake Park have sued the village over their claims that body cameras invaded their privacy by secretly recording them in the bathroom and in other private moments.

The department started using the body cameras last September, and officers were instructed to activate them during traffic stops and other enforcement actions.

But the officers said in the suit that, unbeknownst to them, the cameras were actually shooting video "nonstop," in violation of the department's policy not to record private body parts or nonenforcement activities.

The suit claims that the cameras recorded thousands of "highly offensive and voyeuristic intrusions," including video that exposed officers' genitals and showed them engaging in "private and personal acts," including using the bathroom and changing their clothes.

In response to the federal lawsuit, Chief George Filenko said Friday that he had been unaware of the recordings until an officer discovered them. Filenko issued a statement saying the 10 officers who sued raised their allegations before all the facts are known.

In Round Lake Park, Officer Dominick Izzo, one of the officers suing, said he discovered while reviewing video from his camera in May that it had continued to record even when it was "off" or in sleep mode, according to the lawsuit, which claims the system at that point had video going back at least to February.

Upon realizing what had occurred, the suit states, the officers were "humiliated, embarrassed and greatly upset." Cont.

Trump Supporter Caught Impersonating Black Woman On Twitter

The account has since been deleted.

In case you haven’t noticed, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has a serious problem with minority voters — in fact, some polls have found that more than 90% of black voters have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Because of this, it’s not surprising that at least one Trump fan has come up with a wacky gambit to win over minority voters by impersonating a young black woman on Twitter using the account handle, “BlackGirl4Trump.”

How do we know that they’re impersonating a black woman? Because the woman whose photo is being used in BlackGirl4Trump’s profile is not happy about it.

Here was her initial reaction after being alerted by a friend that her photo was swiped for a pro-Trump Twitter account: "Why are you using my picture!?

This was followed by demands that the Trump fan stop using her photo. Cont.

Thomas Robinson was arrested Tuesday, June 21, for the murder of 17-year-old Reno Armstrong earlier in the month. He'd been on the run. The interview by homicide was over and Robinson was going to jail, charged with murder. Something else was on his mind. Robinson did a "target glance" where he glanced over at his target, the officer's gun. Robinson was handcuffed to the chair when he made his move.

Malaysian Woman Dies After Airbag Ruptures

Similar story I put up here

A Malaysian woman has died after the airbag in her Honda City ruptured in a minor collision, a safety official said Monday.

The incident Sunday came days after Honda Malaysia announced an additional recall of more than 145,000 vehicles to replace defective front passenger airbag inflators.

Fire and rescue official Rosdi Hainan said the steering-wheel airbag had ruptured when he arrived at the site of the accident, and the victim was bleeding from her chest.

Rosdi said the woman died a short time later.

There has been a massive recall involving millions of vehicles around the world because of faulty inflator and propellant devices that may deploy improperly in an accident, shooting out metal fragments that can injure or kill.

Worldwide, 11 known deaths and more than 100 injuries have been blamed on exploding Takata-made airbag inflators. Cont.

50 Cent Arrested For Swearing

Not as bad as when they booked Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Slayer. Story out of St. Kitts, Caribbean:

50 Cent has been arrested in the Caribbean - for Swearing during his live concert.

The Candy Shop rapper was playing a huge show in front of 40,000 people in St. Kitts when he used a word that is actually illegal in the region.

According to TMZ, Fiddy - whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III - had been warned against using profanity during his performance, and organisers weren't happy when he said "motherf*cker" in front of the huge crowd.

The report adds that it was enough to get the star arrested, although officers are said to have waited until after the show, when he was then taken to the station and booked for the minor offence.

The website says that 50 Cent will have to stay until Monday, when he will appear in court and pay a fine for the incident.

Father Saves Daughter After She Falls Into Septic Tank

A Calgary family are concerned for their daughter's health after the 21-month-old fell into a septic tank at a tourist information centre in Maple Creek, Sask., last Thursday.

Trevor Pickersgill, Denaie McCarthy and their three daughters were on their way to Regina when they stopped at the information centre for lunch. The children were playing over the septic tank, situated about five metres away from the picnic table where the couple were sitting, when their youngest daughter, Nataya, fell through the plastic cover on top of the septic tank.

"My daughter fell 10 feet into the septic water. I screamed," said McCarthy. "My husband came running, didn't think for a second. [He] jumped in."

Pickersgill said Nataya was submerged in sewage.

"She was completely in the water, but floating," he said. "She was going through the little tunnel into a different part of the septic tank, and I reached in and grabbed her leg."

Bystanders at the information centre got a rope and pulled Pickersgill and his daughter to safety.

McCarthy said that Nataya suffered a five-centimetre gash on the back of her head as a result of the fall, and seemed to exhibit concussion-like symptoms. Nataya was taken to a hospital in Maple Creek afterward. The parents have also taken her to the Children's Hospital in Calgary regarding their health concerns. They also plan on taking Nataya to their family doctor to get blood tests done. Cont.

Texas County Sues Man For $2 Billion Over Wood Pile

And 3 fiddy. Story out of Hunt County, Texas:

Flower Mound resident Kirk Grady owned some Hunt County property with a woodpile for about three years before he sold it in 2002.

Hunt County now wants to collect as much as $2 billion from him in fines for improper waste disposal, he says. Hunt County sued Grady in Travis County last year, and Grady is fighting back with a federal lawsuit.

Grady's Dallas attorney, Michael R. Goldman, blames the "ridiculous and unconscionable" legal action on the county's  hiring of a private law firm to prosecute the state lawsuit with a contingency-fee provision. That means the law firm gets to keep a percentage of whatever is collected.

That has given the firm a perverse incentive to sue for as much money as possible, said Goldman. And critics say some elected officials could use the law to reward lawyers who give money to their campaigns, as was alleged in a Dallas case.

Grady bought an interest in 50 acres in Hunt County in 1998 that was leased to companies that recycled wood, the federal lawsuit said. In 2000, he bought out his partner. He sold the land to Republic Waste in 2002.

Grady says in his lawsuit that Hunt County doesn't know when the wood pile was placed on the property. Grady also says he only learned about the wood when Hunt County served him with a lawsuit in 2015. Cont.

A family argument over whether the Earth is flat or round became so heated that one of the participants threw a propane cylinder onto a campfire, prompting an intervention by firefighters.

The dispute over a question most considered resolved centuries ago boiled over around 10:30 p.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Park in Brockville, Ont.

Police said a 56-year-old Brockville man was at a campsite with his son and his son's girlfriend when the woman began insisting that the Earth is flat.

The older man insisted the Earth is round.

It's not clear if anyone at the campfire put forth the argument that the Earth's equatorial bulge makes it not perfectly round, but instead a shape known as an oblate spheroid.

Nevertheless, police said the man became so enraged he began throwing objects into the campfire, including a propane cylinder. Cont.

"Mass Casualty Event” - Stabbings At Neo-Nazi Event In Sacramento

Story out of Sacramento, California:

Violent clashes in Sacramento between a group of neo-Nazis and others protesting their presence outside the California state capitol has turned violent with multiple stabbing victims, officials with the city’s fire department reported.

Trouble apparently erupted after protestors engaged with a group of neo-Nazi sympathisers who had gathered for a Sunday morning rally that had been planned for several weeks.

The Sacramento Fire Department confirmed there had been a “mass casualty event” in the capital city of California. Meanwhile a spokesperson said via Twitter that at least five people had been rushed to nearby hospitals, some with critical injuries.

Social media postings on Twitter and elsewhere showed police taping off an area of the Capitol park where the clashes took place and evidence of splatters of blood on the paving.

Officer Matt McPhail with the Sacramento Police Department says none of the injuries of those being treated in hospital are believed to be life-threatening. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Texas Supreme Court Sides With Family Who Refuse To Educate Their Children Because They Are Waiting "To Be Raptured"

Story out of Austin, Texas:

The Texas Supreme Court sided Friday with a family accused of not teaching its children anything while waiting "to be raptured,” but it didn't answer larger constitutional questions about whether home-school children must be properly taught.

Friday's 6-3 decision on technical grounds was a win for Laura and Michael McIntyre, who once educated their nine children in the family's El Paso motorcycle dealership.

The couple argued that school district officials violated their 14th Amendment rights by attempting to verify that its children were learning.

Justices remanded the case to lower courts, saying its constitutional questions weren't educational policy matters. Cont.

Distillery Reveals That Jack Daniel's Was Taught To Make Whiskey By Slave

Story out of Lynchburg, Tennessee:

Every year, about 275,000 people tour the Jack Daniel’s distillery here, and as they stroll through its brick buildings nestled in a tree-shaded hollow, they hear a story like this: Sometime in the 1850s, when Daniel was a boy, he went to work for a preacher, grocer and distiller named Dan Call. The preacher was a busy man, and when he saw promise in young Jack, he taught him how to run his whiskey still — and the rest is history.

This year is the 150th anniversary of Jack Daniel’s, and the distillery, home to one of the world’s best-selling whiskeys, is using the occasion to tell a different, more complicated tale. Daniel, the company now says, didn’t learn distilling from Dan Call, but from a man named Nearis Green — one of Call’s slaves.

This version of the story was never a secret, but it is one that the distillery has only recently begun to embrace, tentatively, in some of its tours, and in a social media and marketing campaign this summer.

For years, the prevailing history of American whiskey has been framed as a lily-white affair, centered on German and Scots-Irish settlers who distilled their surplus grains into whiskey and sent it to far-off markets, eventually creating a $2.9 billion industry and a product equally beloved by Kentucky colonels and Brooklyn hipsters.

Left out of that account were men like Nearis Green. Slavery and whiskey, far from being two separate strands of Southern history, were inextricably entwined. Enslaved men not only made up the bulk of the distilling labor force, but they often played crucial skilled roles in the whiskey-making process. In the same way that white cookbook authors often appropriated recipes from their black cooks, white distillery owners took credit for the whiskey.

In deciding to talk about Green, Jack Daniel’s may be hoping to get ahead of a collision between the growing popularity of American whiskey among younger drinkers and a heightened awareness of the hidden racial politics behind America’s culinary heritage. Cont.

“F*gs Rot In Hell” - Gay Couple Kicked Out Of Uber Car During Pride

Story out of San Francisco, California:

A gay couple in San Francisco have said they were kicked out of an Uber by the driver for kissing, who used a homophobic slur. Matt Togni and his boyfriend Sumeet, said they got into the Uber on the night of San Francisco Pride.

After the driving being fine with them, the couple kissed, and Togni told Sumeet that he loved him, at which point he says the driver called them “disgusting.”

Cancelling the fare, the driver told them to get out, Togni told PinkNews.

The passenger said it was “ridiculous” that this happened at all, let alone on the night of Pride, and went on to say that initially they weren’t sure if they had misheard the driver.

But after telling them to get out of the car, the driver said “fags rot in hell”, according to Togni. Cont.

Texas Judge Tells Lesbian Mother She Has No Rights To Child She Didn't Bear

Comment at bottom of story: "Just for arguments sake, suppose the couple were a man and a woman who had a child via a sperm donation. Would the judge make the same decision? The male parent is not biologically related to the child as Erica is not. What am I missing?" Story out of Knoxville, Tennessee:

If Erica Witt were a man, she would have just as much right to a daughter conceived via artificial insemination as her spouse.

But in the first ruling of its kind in Tennessee, a Knox County judge on Friday opined that because she is a woman who legally married a woman, state law does not confer to her the power of decision-making over the child or the obligation to provide financial support for the girl now that the same-sex couple is divorcing.

"I believe this is a situation where (Erica Witt) has no biological relationship with this child, has no contractual relationship with this child," 4th Circuit Court Judge Greg McMillan ruled.

Erica Witt and Sabrina Witt legally wed in Washington, D.C., in April 2014, bought a home in Knoxville and decided to have a child via artificial insemination from an anonymous donor. Sabrina Witt bore a baby girl as a result in January 2015. Because Tennessee did not then recognize same-sex marriage as legal, Erica Witt's name was not placed on the baby's birth certificate.

In February, Sabrina Witt filed for divorce. Her attorney, John Harber, contended the only law on Tennessee's books addressing parenting rights in the case of artificial insemination — enacted in 1977 — makes clear the law applies only to husbands.

"That terminology is not interchangeable," Harber argued at a hearing Friday.

Tennessee still doesn't have a law on the books officially recognizing same-sex marriage but is essentially under a mandate to do so due to a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year recognizing the rights of same-sex couples to marry. That ruling did not address divorce or parental rights in a divorce in which neither same-sex partner legally adopted the child they call their own.

Even if McMillan eventually awards Erica Witt visitation rights, his refusal to recognize her as a parent means she will have no say in issues including the child's education and medical needs. The decision means she is under no obligation to pay child support either. Cont.

Indonesian Lecturer Called In For Police Questioning After Writing "God Is Not An Arab" On Facebook

Religion makes my head hurt. Story out of Depok, Indonesia:

Ade Armando, a lecturer at Universitas Indonesia (UI), is being summoned by the Jakarta Metro Police for questioning today after being accused of blasphemy.

The communications lecturer was reported to the police for writing a status on Facebook that many netizens considered to be blasphemous. According to Vivanews, the controversial status, which was posted on May 20 and has since been deleted, read:

“God is not an Arab. Surely God would be happy if His scripture is read in the dialects of Minang, Ambon, China, Hip-hop, blues…”

In a recent Facebook post, Ade justified his controversial post by saying he was merely showing his support for the Religious Affairs Ministry’s idea (which itself is highly controversial) for a Quran recital festival in which the Islamic holy book could be recited using Indonesian dialects as well as Arabic. He also wrote that people have been accusing him of blasphemy for comparing God to humans, whereas the essence of his controversial post was the exact opposite of that. Cont.

"I Didn’t Whip My C*ck Out” - Man Arrested After Scanning His Penis At Supermarket Checkout

Story out of Seattle, Washington:

A man has been arrested after he allegedly scanned his penis at a supermarket self service checkout.

The suspect is said to have walked into the shop, in Seattle, and laid his genitals on the self-service scanner. After plopping his private parts on the till, he called a female checkout worker over to help, it is claimed.

His somewhat unusual shopping practice didn’t go down well with the woman and the police were called. Christian Fisher, 31 fled the business before cops arrived, but he returned to the market several hours later and was confronted by workers who recognized him from the earlier incident.

Cops say Fisher ignored employee demands that he leave the store and got into a shoving match with security trying to escort him from the premises.

He was arrested nearby and when told what for, he apparently became upset and shouted: "I didn’t whip my c**k out”.

The Smoking Gun reports he now faces an indecent exposure charge after going back later and getting into a row with security staff. Cont.

CNN Staff In Turmoil After The Hiring Of Former Trump Campaign Manager

They may write a public letter... burn!

Sources told Page Six on Friday that CNN’s “facing a near internal revolt” over Jeff Zucker’s hiring of Lewandowski as an exclusive commentator for the news network days after he was fired as Donald Trump’s campaign manager.

“CNN is facing a near internal revolt over the Corey hiring,” said a TV insider, who described many in the newsroom as “livid.” “Female reporters and producers especially . . . They are organizing and considering publicly demanding” that Lewandowski to be let go.

The hiring of the former Trump campaign manager on Thursday didn’t only alienate women on staff. A source further said that “Latinos and others in the newsroom feel betrayed by an homage to Trump,” so “they may do a public letter” objecting to the move.

A different source said, “Everyone at CNN — and even people who used to work there — are pissed about Trump’s former campaign manager being hired on salary.” Cont.

Teen Held On $6 Million Bail After Shooting Paint Ball Gun At Gay Night Club, Making Terrorism Threats

Story out of Stockton, California:

The Stockton Police Department announced late Wednesday night that it had made an arrest in connection with a paintball gun attack that occurred earlier this month outside a gay nightclub.

Branden Keithly Staples, 19, of Stockton was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, making terrorist threats, committing a hate crime, possession of a destructive device and other crimes, authorities said. He is being held in San Joaquin County Jail on $6 million bail, according to jail records.

Detectives from the Police Department’s Vice Unit contacted Staples while conducting a follow-up investigation on a criminal threats case that was reported by St. Mary’s High School on June 7, said Officer Joe Silva, a spokesman for the department. Investigators believe Staples threatened to harm school staff via social media.

Detectives located Staples in Lodi and transported him to the Police Department’s Investigations Division, Silva said. Through further investigation, detectives determined that Staples also was responsible for the paintball gun attack, which occurred June 12 outside the LGBT Paradise Nightclub on North Lower Sacramento Road, Silva said.

The attack occurred while a gunman was carrying out one of the largest mass shootings in American history inside a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and wounding 53 more. Cont.

“Make Sure He Loses" - Conservative Columnist Changes Party Affiliation Over Trump

Conservative columnist George Will told PJM he has officially left the Republican Party and urged conservatives not to support presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump even if it leads to a Democratic victory in the 2016 presidential election.

Will, who writes for the Washington Post, acknowledged it is a “little too late” for the Republican Party to find a replacement for Trump but had a message for Republican voters.

“Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House,” Will said during an interview after his speech at a Federalist Society luncheon.

Will said he changed his voter registration this month from Republican to “unaffiliated” in the state of Maryland.

“This is not my party,” Will said during his speech at the event.

He mentioned House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) endorsement of Trump as one of the factors that led him to leave the party. Cont.

Mother Fatally Shoots Daughters During Fight Before Police Kill Her

Story out of Fulshear, Texas:

Police say a Houston-area woman fatally shot her two adult daughters before officers shot and killed her.

The incident happened about 5 p.m. Friday in front of a home on the fringe of the Houston suburb of Fulshear. Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls says a motive was still under investigation, but it appeared the shooting was the climax to a family argument.

Nehls says the daughters had already been shot when a Fulshear police officer arrived and saw the mother with a gun in her hand, apparently preparing to shoot one of her daughters again. The officer shot and killed the woman.

Officials identified the mother as Christy Sheats, 42, and her daughters as Taylor Sheats, 22, and Madison Sheats, 17, CBS affiliate KHOU reported.

"It's just crazy," Austin Enke, a neighbor who said he went to high school with one of the victims, told KHOU. "The neighborhood's never seen this kind of thing before. It's always quiet. This is surprising. They never showed any kind of thing that was wrong with them whatsoever." Cont. (Video)

Retired First Sgt. For National Guard Calls Out "Toxic Leadership"

Story out of Nashville, Tennessee:

To black out all of the curse words in retired First Sgt. Dennis Carter’s resignation letter, you need a lot of marker. To hear him read it aloud, you need a lot of bleeps.

"To me, that (the letter) is a truthful statement. All those things are truthful, but I tried to do it in a humorous way,” Carter said.

Carter said he was so ready to leave the 278th Armored Calvary Regiment out of Lebanon, TN, that he wrote the letter last May. He said what the Channel 4 I-Team has exposed this year, from the sexual misconduct of some guardsman, to how others advanced to the ranks despite serious infractions, to how the general wouldn’t address our questions, only scrapes the surface of what he calls toxic leadership.

Randy Harris, spokesman for the Tennessee National Guard, refused our request for an interview about the letter and Carter’s claims, but sent an email writing, “We decline to be a part of this brand of tabloid journalism."

Carter didn’t just stop at submitting the letter; he posted it online on his Facebook page. It then got picked up on a military Facebook page, and has been shared more than 8,700 times.

Some comments praised his post, while others called it extremely unprofessional.

"Especially the National Guard, this is a highly regarded organization. To write a letter like this, are you being disrespectful?” Finley asked.

"I don't think I was being disrespectful to the National Guard. The National Guard has been very good to me. I think the individuals that are named, I do want people to know who they are, I want them to know what kind of leadership we're dealing with,” Carter said.

Carter knows that he has ended his career, but has started a social media firestorm.

"I've burned some pretty big bridges. I'm basically the black sheep here,” Carter said. Cont. (Video)

Prominent Neocon To Help Fundraise For Hillary Clinton

Clinton campaign "will soon begin actively courting the Republican electorate." Remember all those progressive things Bernie made her say, she was just kiddin'.

A prominent neoconservative intellectual and early promoter of the Iraq War is headlining an official campaign fundraiser for Hillary Clinton next month, Foreign Policy has learned. The move signals a shift in the Clinton campaign’s willingness to associate with prominent Republicans and is the latest sign of how far some GOP defectors are willing to go to block a Donald Trump presidency.

Robert Kagan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a co-founder of the Project for the New American Century, will speak at a Hillary for America fundraiser in Washington’s Logan Circle neighborhood on July 21. According to an invite obtained by FP, the “event will include an off-the-record conversation on America’s continued investment in NATO, key European allies and partners, and the EU.”

The Clinton campaign has made clear it believes Trump’s high unfavorable ratings and provocative comments have created an opening for her candidacy among traditional GOP voters, and will soon begin actively courting the Republican electorate. Cont.

Beijing Is Sinking

Beijing residents have put up with choking smog, trash-filled rivers and toxic running tracks. Now they have another concern -- sinking.

An international study led by Beijing-based researchers has discovered that the city is dropping by as much as 11 centimeters (4 inches) in some districts per year.

The thirsty city has depleted its groundwater, which the study identified as the cause of the sinking.

Using satellite imagery and GPS data, the team analyzed topographical trends from 2003 to 2010 and found that the city, which has a population of over 20 million, was sinking at an alarming rate.

Its central districts are among the worst affected, the study says. The main subsidence bowls are distributed over the Chaoyang, Changping, Shunyi and Tongzhou districts. Chaoyang, in the eastern suburbs, is the worst affected, with subsidence of 11 cm per year.

Beijing is ranked as the fifth most water-stressed city in the world, the study notes, and as China continues to urbanize, the stress on subterranean aquifers is only set to worsen.

The study was published this month and supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Cont.

Comedian Throws Nazi Themed Golf Balls At Nazi Themed Republican Nominee

Story out of Scotland:

A Protester believed to be comedian and prankster Lee Nelson, was ejected from Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland this morning after throwing a bag full of swastika-emblazoned golf balls towards the mogul.

The presumptive GOP nominee, taking a break from the White House campaign trail to promote his business interests in the country, was just about to begin a speech to mark the reopening of the resort, which is around two hours’ drive down the coast from Glasgow.

The protester, who had been perched in front of a bank of TV cameras for around an hour, unfurled the red, white and black balls from a holdall bag – throwing the carefully choreographed press op into chaos.

“These are the new balls available from the club house – part of the new Trump Turnberry range,” he said, his voice wavering slightly.

He then tried to hand the (presumably) custom designed balls out to club members and reporters.

“Get him out,” a calm-looking Trump said from the podium.

Security guards sprang into action and hauled the protester away. Cont. (Video)

Father Pays $900 For Full Page Ad To Get His Son A Mate

"If you voted for [Barack] Obama or plan to vote for Hillary [Clinton] you are not for me." Got it... Trump in a dress. Story out of Spokane, Washington:

Can he shell out money for the first date too? A Beverly Hills dad named Arthur Brooks paid $900 for an advertisement in Idaho's Coeur d’Alene Press newspaper to find his future daughter-in-law — and his son isn't jumping for joy.

The Spokesman-Review, of Spokane, WA, reports that the bachelor, Salt Lake City businessman Baron Brooks, was shocked when he found out what his father did.

"My father did this without my consent. I can’t even describe to you how embarrassing and ridiculous this is," Baron, 48, told the site. "He just does this crap. … If I shared some of the stories, you wouldn’t believe it. He just does weird stuff, and nobody knows why."

Arthur, 78, doesn't want his son to date just anyone. According to the ad, which features a photo of Baron, Arthur is "looking for a wife who is ready, willing and able to have children as soon as possible" and someone who is willing to "be a stay at home mom."

Even more, the woman needs to be politically conservative. "This is very important to me," the ad read. "If you voted for [Barack] Obama or plan to vote for Hillary [Clinton] you are not for me."

Baron may not be pleased with his dad's actions, but that doesn't mean he won't take advantage of the situation. He's allowing his dad to interview interested women at The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Saturday, June 25. (Baron noted that his dad, who has recently fallen ill, wants a grandson to carry on his name.) Cont.

After Finding 6-Month-Old Daughter In Hot Car Father Puts Her In Fridge

Story out of Mckinney, Texas:

A North Texas father and former teacher in the Celina Independent School District is free on bond. Michael Shannon Thedford was arrested after his 6-month-old daughter died after being left in a hot car yesterday.

Thedford posted $20,000 bond late Tuesday night. He has been charged with manslaughter.

Thedford told investigators he dropped off his three and 5-year-old children at a daycare center, while his wife was at work. He said he went home and went to sleep, forgetting his 6-month-old daughter was still strapped in car seat inside the minivan.

Thedford said when he went outside and found the baby not moving, he immediately took her indoors and put her in the refrigerator, with the door open. He then called his wife and 911, and attempted CPR.

When paramedics got to the home outside Melissa, deputies say the child was still unresponsive. Temperatures were in the mid 90’s by afternoon.

Twins Found Dead After Sneaking Into Hot Pickup Truck

Story out of Bossier City, Louisiana:

The deaths of the Bossier City twins discovered in a truck over the weekend were heat-related, according to preliminary autopsy results.  Oliver and Aria Orr, 3, were found unresponsive by their mother inside the family's pickup truck in the driveway of their Horseshoe Trail home on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the children, but they were pronounced dead at Willis-Knighton Bossier hospital.

Neighbors have told police that the twins' mother, who was home at the time, had contacted them saying she was looking for the children.

"She just said that she had fell asleep and now the door was wide open and the babies were gone," said next-door neighbor Rhonda Matthews.

Matthews said after a search, the mother found Aria in the front seat and she found Oliver in the back seat, looking like he had been sleeping.

"He was sitting in the floorboard and he had put his head in the seat," Matthews said. "I did CPR on both of them." But, Matthews said neither of the toddlers responded to CPR.

Investigators are still working to determine whether the children would have been able to open the door of the truck themselves, but Natale was not able to say for sure whether the truck had been locked. He did confirm that a step-stool was found next to the truck. It is not known how long the children were missing. Cont. (Video)
