Quebec SWAT Shoot And Kill Man After 16-Hour Standoff
Story out of Jonquière, Quebec:
A 16-hour standoff in Jonquière, Que., ended Saturday afternoon after provincial police opened fire on a man wielding what looked to be a homemade bomb.
The 27-year-old man was rushed to hospital, where he was initially reported to be in critical condition. He died later Saturday afternoon, the Bureau of Independent Investigations said.
He had been locked inside the apartment since Friday night, when police arrived after bystanders tracked him from the scene of a robbery.
The man is believed to have held up a pharmacy with a knife. Radio-Canada reported that the bystanders who tracked the man punctured his tires after he parked his car and entered the apartment. Police arrived shortly after.
The man stepped outside his apartment around 12:30 a.m. carrying a propane tank and an object that police think may have been an electric detonator.
The man demanded to speak to his lawyer, but refused to turn himself over to authorities. Police described him as being in a state of psychological distress.
He re-emerged shortly after noon, a large black propane tank slung over his shoulder. He confronted a SWAT team, who shot him. Cont.
