Rep. Richard Hanna Of New York First Congressional Republican To Endorse Hillary Clinton

Rep. Richard Hanna of New York on Tuesday became the first congressional Republican to announce he would vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

While other GOP lawmakers have said they cannot support their party’s nominee, Donald Trump, Mr. Hanna was the first to say in an op-ed published on Syracuse.com that he will cast his ballot across party lines. The New York Republican, who is retiring at the end of this year, said Mr. Trump’s public spat with the parents of a Muslim U.S. Army captain killed in Iraq pushed him to move beyond simply criticizing Mr. Trump.

“For me, it is not enough to simply denounce his comments: He is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country,” Mr. Hanna wrote. “While I disagree with her on many issues, I will vote for Mrs. Clinton. I will be hopeful and resolute in my belief that being a good American who loves his country is far more important than parties or winning and losing.” Cont.
