Son Of A Politician Dies At Water Park

Story out of Kansas City, Kansas:

A Kansas water park and the world's tallest water slide remained closed Monday while authorities investigated the death of the 10-year-old son of a state lawmaker on "Elected Officials Day."

Caleb Schwab died Sunday at the Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, Kan., while riding the Verrückt — German for "insane" — a slide that drops riders at 65 mph from a height of almost 169 feet. Riders sit in a three-person raft and are secured with straps across the waist and shoulders. Marketing materials include the slogan "R U Insane?"

Caleb Schwab was the son of state Rep. Scott Schwab and his wife, Michele, of Olathe.

It was not immediately clear if the boy fell from the ride. His family was at the park when the tragedy occurred, park spokeswoman Pam Renteria said.

Velcro seat belts lash riders to the raft, and netting encloses the chute to retain the raft in the unlikely event it goes flying. During early testing, rafts did just that. Cont.
