Ottawa Threatens To Shut Down 'Little Free Library' Over City By Law

"If you are going to sin, sin against God, not the bureaucracy. God will forgive you but the bureaucracy won't." - Hyman Rickover
Story out of Ottawa, Ontario:

Mimi Golding stocks the cabinet-sized mini-library in front of her house with a handful of favourite books. The three outdoor book boxes are approximately half a metre wide and stand at the edge of Golding’s front yard on Oxford Street in the Hintonburg neighbourhood of Ottawa. For three years, she has been lovingly stocking her micro library with free books for passersby who can share their own books in return.

The concept of the little library is simple: you can either take a book or place a book. There are no library membership cards or late fees. The idea of these free little neighbourhood libraries has grown in popularity worldwide with the interest in promoting literacy.

Despite the tiny library’s popularity, Golding is faced with the prospect of losing it. The city of Ottawa inspected the book boxes, which are technically on city property, after they received a complaint. The Ottawa city bylaw department told Golding that her library encroached on the city’s right of way. Now, her only options are to move the two boxes back three metres or tear them down by next Friday. If she moves the library back those three metres, it will be almost pressed up against her home, she said.

Golding said she isn’t going to give up hope for her cherished free library. Cont.
