California Police Shoot Unarmed Man With Armored Car Turret

Donnell Thompson was shot dead on July 28. Officers initially said he had charged at them after a stolen car they were chasing crashed in Compton area of Los Angeles. They said they shot Thompson because they suspected him of being the armed carjacker. But now the police department says there are witness accounts that say Thompson was shot after officers had arrested the carjacker. Police also say no weapons were recovered from the 27-year-old. Thompson’s family has demanded a public apology from the police and an independent investigation. They say the killing was racially motivated. Repeated fatal shootings of unarmed African Americans by police have triggered outrage across the in the past couple of years. Activists and families of the victims largely consider the shootings as intentional murder.
