Vietnam Vet Sets Himself On Fire Over Trump Argument

A Vietnam veteran in Akron, Ohio, set himself on fire Saturday after becoming frustrated with locals in a coffee shop for not protesting President-elect Donald Trump vehemently enough, ABC 5 News Cleveland reports. The unnamed 69-year-old walked into Angel Falls Coffee around 9:15 a.m. and began engaging with customers about the recent protests. While about 300 marched against Trump recently in the nearby city of Cleveland, and thousands nationwide, the vet thought the demonstrations should be larger. “He seemed to be pro-rally, against Trump and he talked to my customers about how people needed to protest more against Trump,” Angel Falls Coffee shop owner Jim King told ABC News 5 Cleveland.

Dressed in a U.S. Marine Corps uniform and becoming upset, the man then left the coffee shop and handed a passerby his phone requesting they begin recording. Things turned gruesome – the vet then grabbed a can of gasoline from his car, doused himself in it, and set himself on fire. While the passerby didn’t take the video, witnesses were able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. “He was curled in a fetal position, perfectly still except for some hand movement and he was completely covered in ash,” said King.

The vet was taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently being treated in the burn unit. He is expected to survive. Cont.

Fort Bragg Soldier Found Dead In Barracks

A 21-year-old soldier was found unresponsive Wednesday in his barracks on Fort Bragg, officials confirmed.

Private 1st Class David Winchester of Adamsville, Alabama was later pronounced dead after being found. His death is under investigation by Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.

“Private 1st Class David ‘Shiver’ Winchester Jr. was the embodiment of what every commander hopes for in a Soldier; an enthusiastic, high-performing member of our medical maintenance team, and he touched many lives through his sophisticated work and personal drive to make a positive impact on all around him,” said Lt. Col. Aric Bowman, commander of the 261st MMB. “Our entire team shares in this loss with his family, and we actively pray for peace and comfort for all that knew this wonderful young man.” Cont.

'We Don't Let Blacks Serve In Germany' - Chili's Restaurant Under Fire For Taking Food Away From Black War Vet

U.S. Army veteran Ernest Walker started recording video when a manager at a Chili’s restaurant in Cedar Hill, Texas, questioned his military service and took away his food.

Like some other establishments around the country, Chili’s offered free meals to veterans and active military service members on Veterans Day. Walker wrote on his Facebook page that he was eating at Chili’s with his service dog, Barack, when an elderly customer wearing a Trump shirt came up to him. “He said he was in Germany, and that they did not let Blacks serve over there,” Walker wrote.

Soon after, Walker said the restaurant’s manager approached him and said that a fellow customer said Walker was “not a real soldier because [he] had [his] hat on indoors.” He asked to see identification, and continued to question Walker. Eventually, he took his food away, even though Walker showed him his military ID and discharge paperwork.

Walker posted the video, which has been viewed more than 350,000 times, to Facebook. He wrote that the incident made him feel “grossly offended, embarrassed, dehumanized.” On Friday, protesters organized outside the Chili’s restaurant to support Walker.

Walker told the Dallas Morning News that he felt the election had “changed the hearts” of people.

“I do believe that the election has changed the hearts and changed the motives of people so much so that he believed in his heart and mind after talking to the Trump supporter that I was stealing food,” Walker said.

Late Monday, Chili’s president Kelli Valade released a statement saying that the company had removed, though not fired, the manager who took away Walker’s food. The statement also said the restaurant chain had personally apologized to Walker.

Since Walker’s story made headlines, supporters created a GoFundMe page to buy dinner for the veteran. At the time of this writing, the page had surpassed its $100 goal and earned $350. Walker wrote on Facebook that he was honored someone would create a page for him, but wanted to raise money on behalf of his fellow service members.

“There are thousands of hungry Veterans that are Forgotten and Homeless,” he wrote. “So I challenge America to raise enough money to Feed A Million Soldiers.” Cont.

"Depraved" - ISIL Using Thousands Of Human Shields As Death Toll Rises In The Fight For Mosul

ISIS appears to be using tens of thousands of people as human shields in and around Mosul, where Iraqi forces are waging a large-scale offensive aimed at retaking the country's second largest city, the UN human rights office said Friday.

It has received reports of more than 200 people being killed for refusing to comply with ISIS orders or previously belonging to Iraqi security forces. It said "credible reports" suggest the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has been forcing tens of thousands from their homes in districts around Mosul.

The militant group's "depraved, cowardly strategy is to attempt to use the presence of civilian hostages to render certain points, areas or military forces immune from military operations, effectively using tens of thousands of women, men and children as human shields," spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said in Geneva.

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Matthew C. Isler said Iraqi troops on Friday were consolidating gains made east and south of the city earlier this week, but insisted "momentum" was still on their side.

Isler says the U.S.-led coalition has stepped up airstrikes against the militants, and is carrying out three times as many as it did during previous campaigns to drive ISIS from other Iraqi cities. Cont. (Video)

A Russian missile design company has unveiled the first image of a new weapon in Russia's arsenal: the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, nicknamed "Satan 2."

The RS-28 Sarmat rocket "is capable of wiping out parts of the earth the size of Texas or France," Russian state news outlet Sputnik reported in May.

The image was published by the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau on its website.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borsiov said the Sarmat warhead was capable of destroying targets flying across both North and South Poles, Russian state news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

NATO has been bolstering its defenses in countries along the Russian border amid growing concerns about Moscow's military direction. NATO defense ministers are currently meeting in Brussels to discuss the situation, as well as the fight against ISIS. Cont.

Donald Trump drew criticism for his remarks Monday that many interpreted as reinforcing a stigma that veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder are weak. Trump's supporters responded by saying the remarks were badly taken out of context.

Here's what Trump said after being asked about his plans to curb veterans' suicides at an event organized by the Retired American Warriors PAC in Northern Virginia:

"When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat and they see things that maybe a lot of folks in this room have seen many times over and you're strong and you can handle it but a lot of people can't handle it. They see horror stories, they see events you couldn't see in a movie, nobody would believe it ..."

"You know when you hear the 22 suicides a day, it's a big part of your question, but when you hear the 22 suicides a day, that should never be. That should never be. So we're going to be addressing that very strongly. "

"And the whole mental health issue is going to be a very important issue when I take over, and the VA is going to be fixed in so many ways, but that's gonna be one of the ways we're gonna help. And that's in many respects going to be the number one thing we have to do because I think it's really been left behind."

Critics took exception to Trump's portrayal of the victims of PTSD as being people who "can't handle" the things they saw in war, in contrast to the room of veterans he was addressing, who are "strong" and who "can handle it."

"Where in the hell is he from?" an emotional Vice President Biden asked in reference to Trump's comments — Biden confessed he had only been told about Trump's comments and had not heard them firsthand. "I don't think he was trying to be mean. He is just so thoroughly, completely uninformed."

Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, didn't attack Trump as vociferously as other but rather said the incident illustrates just how complex an issue PTSD is. "When political leaders talk about things like PTSD and suicide, they need to be responsible and precise," Rieckhoff told the Hollywood Reporter. Donald Trump slammed the military service of trans troops as ‘politically correct’ in Virginia yesterday.

At an American Warriors PAC Q&A a man talked about the ‘warrior ethos that is in the DNA of the military’ and asked Trump: ‘Under this administration this ethos has been under attack and in some cases undermined by the forces of political correctness – the military has become an institution for social experiments, and as a result the military has undergone a number of changes to regulations with regards to women in combat, transgender rights and other issues.’

‘None of these PC actions were combat-effective or readiness driven. In fact the opposite is happening. Deployability, readiness and morale are all adversely affected. What will you do about the social engineering and political correctness that’s been imposed on our military?’

Trump responded: "We’re going to get away from political correctness – we are gonna have to do that. Some of the things they’re asking you to do and be politically correct about are ridiculous. I will say, I would leave many of the decisions of some of the things you mentioned to the generals, the admirals, the people on top (except he wants to fire them all). We’d get our military people to come back and make recommendations to me and I will follow those recommendations. I will follow them very strongly."

Jay Brown, the communications director of the HRC, said in a statement yesterday: ‘Allowing transgender people to serve their country isn’t about politics, it’s about extending them the respect and dignity every service member deserves. This is yet another example of the grave threat that Donald Trump and Mike Pence pose to LGBTI Americans.’

Brown also says:’ According to the Williams Institute, there are approximately 15,500 actively serving transgender members in the US military, making the Department of Defense (DOD) the largest employer of transgender people in America.’

“Just like workers comp out here’s got moochers, I wish that there were no vets that were the same sort of problem on our society,” said Davidson. “But part of the problem is there are some vets that are moochers and they’re clogging up the system. And we do as taxpayers want to make sure the VA filters out these folks that are pretenders. A PowerPoint training slide listing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and retired Gen. David Petraeus among "insiders" who threatened national security was in use for 18 months at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, before Army officials pulled it out of circulation.

The image includes photos of Clinton and Petraeus along with Maj. Nidal Hasan (who shot and killed 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009), Aaron Alexis (who shot and killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard in 2013), Chelsea Manning (convicted in 2013 for leaking documents while an active-duty soldier) and Edward Snowden (who leaked classified National Security Agency surveillance information in 2013). It was posted Sunday on the U.S Army W.T.F! moments Facebook page.

The slide came to the attention of Army Training and Doctrine Command on Monday, TRADOC spokesman Maj. Thomas Campbell said, and it was pulled from the presentation, which is part of a quarterly training requirement, "promptly."

Campbell could not provide specifics regarding how many soldiers had received the training, which unit or individuals had created the slide, and whether any punishments or investigations were conducted, saying only that officials have "addressed the issue with our personnel." Donald Trump’s presidential campaign denied a report on Wednesday that the Republican presidential nominee had three times asked a foreign policy adviser why the U.S. could not use its vast nuclear arsenal.

“There is no truth to this,” spokeswoman Hope Hicks told The Hill in an email, as the anecdote from MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough gained traction on the internet.

According to Scarborough, Trump thrice questioned a pillar of U.S. nuclear policy during an hour-long briefing with an unidentified foreign policy expert at some point in the last several months.

“If we have them, why can’t we use them?” Trump asked, according to the “Morning Joe” host.

The claim plays into the hands of Trump’s critics, who have routinely questioned his fitness for the Oval Office and warned that his many unorthodox foreign policy positions would make the world less safe. Veterans Of Foreign Wars Demand Apology From Trump After His Crude Remarks Toward Military Families

The Veterans of Foreign Wars blasted Donald Trump and a group of Gold Star families of fallen service members demanded he apologize for comments about the parents of a slain Muslim U.S. solider.

"Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression," said Brian Duffy, who was elected July 27 to lead the nation's oldest and largest major war veterans organization.

"There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed," added Duffy, the national commander of the near 1.7 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and its Auxiliary.

"Giving one's life to nation is the greatest sacrifice, followed closely by all Gold Star families, who have a right to make their voices heard."

The VFW statement came just hours after a group of Gold Star families wrote to Trump.

"Your recent comments regarding the Khan family were repugnant and personally offensive to us," wrote the group of 11 "Gold Star" families, who are those who have lost a family member in war. "We feel we must speak out and demand you apologize to the Khans, to all Gold Star families, and to all Americans for your offensive, and frankly anti-American comments."

The letter, published Monday on VoteVets.org, comes amid a chorus of criticism in response to Trump's burgeoning feud with the Khan family, which began after Khizr Khan, the father of slain Army Cpt. Humayun Khan, delivered a forceful condemnation of Trump in a speech at the Democratic National Convention. Mike Pence had only released a text statement in the more than 48 hours since Donald Trump questioned the mother and father of fallen U.S. soldier Humayun Khan.

He had avoided cameras and questions on Monday during his travels to Nevada after a weekend at home in Indianapolis.

But at a town hall in this Nevada town on Monday night, the Republican vice presidential nominee got the question — from a mother of an active Air Force staff sergeant:

"Time and time again Trump has disrespected our nation's armed forces and veterans — and his disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example of that," Catherine Byrne, the mother of Raymond Harmon, who is currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, said to Pence. "Will there ever be a point in time when you're able to look Trump in the eye and tell him 'Enough is enough?' You have a son in the military. How do you tolerate his disrespect?"

The crowd booed Byrne as she asked her question. Pence did attempt to quiet the jeers after she spoke, saying, "folks that's what freedom looks like and what freedom sounds like," to a smattering of applause.

"I felt disrespected," Byrne told NBC News after the event, regarding the crowd's overwhelming reaction to her. "And that was what my question was — disrespect toward the military. The crowd as a group booed me." Cont.

Israeli Military Bans Soldiers From Playing Pokemon GO

The Israeli military is warning its soldiers about a new threat: the widely popular mobile phone game "Pokemon Go."

The army said Monday it has banned its forces from playing the game on Israeli military bases due to security concerns. In a directive to soldiers and officers, the army warned the game activates cellphone cameras and location services, and could leak sensitive information like army base locations and photographs of the bases.

The military is also concerned that soldiers could download a fake application that impersonates "Pokemon Go" but could leak information from soldiers' phones. Cont.

2 Soldiers Fondly Remembered After Being Killed While Helping Woman

Tributes continue to come in for two local soldiers killed at a Lake Murray bar who witnesses say were trying to help a woman who was being attacked.

Deputies say 40-year-old Staff Sergeant Charles Allen Judge Jr. and 29-year-old Sergeant First Class Jonathan Michael Prins were both shot and killed by 25-year-old Joseph Elijah Mills outside the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill on Dreher Island Road early Sunday morning.

Mills left the scene after the killings, but was eventually captured late Sunday afternoon, officers said. At a hearing Monday, he was denied bond.

Justin Brooks, the owner of Frayed Knot, said Mills was kicking and hitting the victim on the ground. A group of people threw him off her, and while he was on the ground, he fired shots into the air.

"When [Judge and Prins] get in within two feet of him—they both have their hands up trying to talk to him—and he just shoots them in cold blood," Brooks said. And then just walks off like nothing happened. Walked off like he was shopping at Walmart, right down the aisle. Put a shirt over his head so people couldn’t see him and just walked right off.

A musician says a kiss on the cheek of his same-sex partner at a Royal Canadian Legion in Halifax is to blame for somebody yelling a homophobic slur and the performance being cut short.

Bernie Doucette said he set up his equipment at the Almon Street Legion on Sunday afternoon, and then he and his partner of 20 years went outside to smoke a cigarette.

Doucette said he noticed a man in a blue coat across the street who was "staring at us intently," but he decided to ignore it. He said he gave his partner a kiss on the cheek and went in alone to start the show. Midway through the second set, Doucette said he noticed the man in the blue coat going from person to person in the audience, pointing at him.

That was when he said he heard somebody yell: "Get that faggot singer off the stage."

Doucette said the bartender came over and told him to stop playing. When he asked for an explanation, the bartender said the audience was complaining that his set — which included covers of Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan songs — sounded like "funeral music," Doucette said.

He said he told the bartender "people are tapping their toes, and singing along," but the bartender said "just take the money. We'll pay you in full. Just take the money and leave."

Doucette said he had played gigs at that location before and never had a problem. "I felt safe." He said he feels connected to the military. His uncle fought in the Second World War, his brother also enlisted and his nephew served in Afghanistan.

Doucette said this experience has shaken his willingness to perform again — at a Legion, or anywhere.

"When you get on stage you take on a persona so that nothing bothers you," he said. "You have to, because if you let it get to you — because it will — then you can't do your job. That is bullet-proof. That's Teflon. That's six feet thick. Once the glass is broken, it's broken. You can glue it together all you want. You're still going to see the cracks." South Korean Prime Minister Pelted With Eggs During Apology Tour

Sounds like the farmers of the area are hoping for a new egglection. Story out of Seongju County, South Korea:

South Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn was stranded inside his car for hours on Friday, surrounded by an angry mob opposing the deployment of an advanced missile defense system in Seongju county in the country's south.

The South Korean military announced on Wednesday that it will place the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in the county, which is about 250 kilometers southeast of the capital Seoul. It said the placement could ensure the safety of country's population from North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

But many of the county's 45,000 residents - mostly farmers - strongly oppose the decision, citing health and environmental concerns. They said officials never consulted them before announcing the decision.

Prime Minister Hwang visited Seongju county on Friday in an attempt to ease their anger.

"I apologize again for not informing you prior to the announcement," Hwang told the county's residents. His address was broadcast live on CNN affiliate YTN.

But the protesters weren't satisfied. YTN broadcast video of protesters throwing eggs and water bottles at Hwang, which stained the Prime Minister's suit. His aides and security guards tried to block the flying objects with umbrellas and their bare hands.

Navy Revises Medal Count For SEAL Chris Kyle

Hollywood could make a movie based on this guy's lies, oh, right, they did. Fake baby and all.

Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, the late famed “American Sniper,” overstated the number of medals he was awarded for heroism, according to a Navy investigation released Friday.

The Navy personnel form that Kyle signed and initialed when he left the Navy in 2009 credited him with two Silver Star and six Bronze Star medals with “V” device for valor, according to the document. Kyle, whose best-selling book American Sniper was later made into a Hollywood blockbuster, wrote that he had been awarded two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars. He was killed in 2013 by a veteran he had mentored.

However, the Navy’s investigation of Kyle’s record, which began in 2012, determined that Kyle had commendations for one Silver Star and four Bronze Star medals with “V” devices. The service issued a revised form, known as the DD 214, on June 14. The Silver Star is the military’s third-highest award; the Medal of Honor and Service Cross are the first and second.

Kyle had made other, unverifiable claims, including his account of shooting dozens of rioters in New Orleans in the chaos that followed Hurricane Katrina. He also wrote that he had punched a man later identified as Jesse Ventura, the former Minnesota governor. A jury awarded Ventura $1.8 million in a defamation lawsuit against Kyle’s estate.

It is unclear who made the original error, and it appears to be a clerical mistake that was not corrected by Kyle or other Navy officials. The Navy is automating its personnel record system to prevent such errors. Cont.

Retired First Sgt. For National Guard Calls Out "Toxic Leadership"

To black out all of the curse words in retired First Sgt. Dennis Carter’s resignation letter, you need a lot of marker. To hear him read it aloud, you need a lot of bleeps.

"To me, that (the letter) is a truthful statement. All those things are truthful, but I tried to do it in a humorous way,” Carter said.

Carter said he was so ready to leave the 278th Armored Calvary Regiment out of Lebanon, TN, that he wrote the letter last May. He said what the Channel 4 I-Team has exposed this year, from the sexual misconduct of some guardsman, to how others advanced to the ranks despite serious infractions, to how the general wouldn’t address our questions, only scrapes the surface of what he calls toxic leadership.

Randy Harris, spokesman for the Tennessee National Guard, refused our request for an interview about the letter and Carter’s claims, but sent an email writing, “We decline to be a part of this brand of tabloid journalism."

Carter didn’t just stop at submitting the letter; he posted it online on his Facebook page. It then got picked up on a military Facebook page, and has been shared more than 8,700 times.

Some comments praised his post, while others called it extremely unprofessional.

"Especially the National Guard, this is a highly regarded organization. To write a letter like this, are you being disrespectful?” Finley asked.

"I don't think I was being disrespectful to the National Guard. The National Guard has been very good to me. I think the individuals that are named, I do want people to know who they are, I want them to know what kind of leadership we're dealing with,” Carter said.

Carter knows that he has ended his career, but has started a social media firestorm.

"I've burned some pretty big bridges. I'm basically the black sheep here,” Carter said. Cont. (Video)

Active-Duty Marines Investigated Over Horrific Anti-LGBT Facebook Post

It's got to be a full time job to get a lot of these meatheads to conduct themselves worthy of the uniform.

Two active-duty Marines are under investigation in connection to a social media post purportedly threatening to attack gay bars following Sunday's deadly mass shooting in Florida.

The California-based I Marine Expeditionary Force launched a command investigation after a photo surfaced on social media showing a corporal in uniform holding a rifle with his finger near the trigger. The words “Coming to a gay bar near you!” appear at the bottom of the photo.

The picture was posted recently to Camp MENdleton resale, a closed Facebook group for male Marines with more than 25,000 members. The person who purportedly posted it also wrote “Too soon?”

Marine officials have vowed to take “appropriate action” in response to the social media post, according to a statement released by I MEF. Cont.
