Thousands Protest After Turkish Government Tries To Legalize Child Rape

Story out of Istanbul, Turkey:

The government insists the legislation is aimed at dealing with the widespread custom of child marriage, but critics say that it will legitimise child rape.

Protesters clapped and chanted: "We will not shut up. We will not obey. Withdraw the bill immediately!"

There were demonstrations in other cities including Izmir and Trabzon.

The law would allow the release of men who assaulted a minor without "force, threat, or any other restriction on consent" and married the victim.

About 3,000 protesters gathered in Istanbul's Kadikoy square, according to reports.

Some waved banners with slogans such as "Rape cannot be legitimised" and "AKP, take your hands off my body" - referring to the AKP party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which introduced the bill.

The bill follows a previous controversy after Turkey's constitutional court in July annulled part of the criminal code which classified all sexual acts with children under 15 as sexual abuse. Cont.

Woman Dies 45 Minutes Into Flight After Putting Her Medication Into Check-In Luggage

Story out of Turkey/Russia:

A diabetic woman who decided to put her insulin into her checked-in luggage died 45 minutes into a flight – with airline staff unable to help her.

The 50-year-old, who has not been named, died on the Azur Air flight to the Russian capital Moscow, having just visited the popular tourist city of Antalya, in South Turkey, with her husband.

The woman’s husband said the woman chose to keep the medication in her checked-in luggage because she had had an insulin shot just one hour prior to the flight.

The woman is believed to have suffered acute heart failure leading to her death.

Flight attendants then made the decision to lie the victim down on the corridor and covered her with a blanket. Cont.

Story out of Duzici, Turkey:

Shocking footage shows Erdogan Ceren, from Turkey, holds a shotgun to his chest while addressing the camera and, after one failed attempt, ends his life.

The 22-year-old first tells viewers on the social networking site that his girlfriend had broken up with him and therefore intends to commit suicide.

He tells the camera, 'No one believed when I said I will kill myself – so watch this.'

The young man is shirtless in what appears to be his bedroom as he presses the gun to his chest.

His first attempt fails as the shotgun appears to lock.

Around 37 seconds into the four minute clip, the young man readjusts the camera, takes aim... and fires.

According to Turkish website bugunun haberi, his relatives heard the shooting and discovered his body. Local media reports state he later died in hospital.

Ceren had previously documented his distraught emotions online, posting a Facebook status saying 'feeling broken' along with the words, 'Our love saga would be written, "Behold, the eyes would not cry, half of you is going to tell you now, my hands do without that side''.' Cont. (Video)

Suicide Bomber As Young As 12 Kills 51 At Kurdish Wedding

A day after a suicide bomber attacked an outdoor Kurdish wedding party in southeastern Turkey, killing at least 51 people and wounding dozens, the Turkish president says the assailant was with the group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and as young as 12.

The bombing late Saturday in Gaziantep, near Turkey's border with Syria, was the deadliest attack in Turkey this year.

Turkey has been rocked by a wave of attacks in the past year that have either been claimed by Kurdish militants linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party — known by its acronym PKK — or were blamed on ISIS. In June, suspected ISIS militants attacked Istanbul's main airport with guns and bombs, killing 44 people. A dual suicide bombing blamed on ISIS at a peace rally in Turkey's capital, Ankara, in October killed 103 victims. Cont.

Watch Failed Assassination Attempt As Wife Shields Husband from Gun Shots

Story out of Turkey:

Terrifying moment caught on video of wife saving her husband from a gunman in a dramatic assassination attempt outside a Turkish court.

The shooter yells “traitor” and takes several shots at Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet, before he is subdued.

Dundar’s wife, Dilek, courageously obstructs the gunman and he is soon wrestled to the ground with the help of a policeman.

 Dundar was waiting outside the courthouse while judges decided on a verdict when he was attacked.

He escaped unharmed but Yagiz Senkal, a journalist working for the private NTV television station, was shot in the leg.

Dundar said after the attack: “I don’t know who the attacker is but I know who encouraged him and made me a target.”

His comments are thought to have been aimed at the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and others who have called for him to be punished. Cont. (Video)

The Turkey branch of Amnesty International is showing up stigma – with a hidden camera stunt in a pet shop.

Homosexuality has been legal in Turkey for over 150 years – but LGBT people still face a strong stigma, and have little legal protection or rights.

In the clip, a range of people are shown looking at the turtles in the turtle tank.       

However, when they ask about them, the pet shop owner dutifully informs them that the turtle is homosexual.

Incredibly, despite being entirely made up, this puts a lot of the people off. Cont.

Turkey's President Thinks Hitler's Germany Would Make A Great Presidential System

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is pushing for constitutional changes that would turn Turkey's political system into a presidential system expanding the powers of his office, has cited Hitler's Germany as an example.

Asked whether the system he wants could exist within a "unitary state", Erdogan told reporters late Thursday that Hitler's Germany was one example in history, among others, where the presidential system had functioned.

Erdogan said: "When you look at Hitler's Germany, you'll see it there." Cont.
