Jail Sued For Letting Heroin Addict Die After Losing 16 Pounds In 3 Days

Story out of Warren County, Ohio:

A lawsuit filed Tuesday claims a man held in the Warren County Jail died of dehydration due to lack of medical care while suffering from heroin withdrawal last September.

The family of Jason Pittman is suing Warren County, Correctional Healthcare Companies, jail medical director Dr. Mohammed Baig and other jail staff for civil rights violations and wrongful death.

"Jason is another victim of heroin, which challenges many families in our area. Proper steps to treat withdrawal are well known," said Al Gerhardstein, the family's attorney. "Failure to take those steps made his death foreseeable and preventable. His two children deserved better care for their dad."

The suit states Pittman began vomiting frequently in jail, and when given water he couldn't keep it down. It claims that medical workers determined he was suffering from moderately severe withdrawal.

Pittman died on Sept. 17 after losing 16 pounds in three and a half days, according to the suit. The coroner ruled that his death was caused by dehydration.

Gerhardstein said Wednesday that Pittman was never given intravenous fluids to replace those he lost due to vomiting. Cont.
