James Halsell Jr, 59, was arrested after the deadly crash on Monday in Alabama. Authorities said Halsell's car collided with a Ford Fiesta carrying 11-year-old Niomi James and 13-year-old Jayla Parler.
Both girls, who were half-sisters according to local media reports, were ejected from the vehicle and died.Two others, including the girls' father, were injured in the early morning crash.
An update on their condition was not immediately available.
Halsell was selected by NASA in 1990 and became an astronaut the following year, according to an online biography on NASA's website.He was a five-flight veteran, logging more than 1,250 hours in space. Cont.
