Senator Freaks Out Over Birthday Cake Featuring Boobs, Purple Unicorn

But why smash the cake. Cake still cake. Sad face.

Story out of Louisiana:

When Louisiana state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson saw her colleague's birthday cake, she decided to take care of the offending dessert herself.

The senator walked into an area used as a break room at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge before a budget hearing Friday morning and saw a birthday cake for state Rep. Mark Abraham. On the box was a sign reading, "Happy Birthday Mark Abraham. He likes his cake and eats it too!!!!"

She told Mashable in a phone call Friday evening that she immediately noticed the bikini-shaped cake with candles coming out of the breasts and a purple unicorn tattoo above the panty line.

Carter said she approached Abraham about the dessert and traced back the cake as a gift from state Rep. Jack McFarland and his wife. She then told the birthday boy, "It's rather offensive," and continued to chew him out. "I said some language I’m not proud of using," the senator admitted. She said she apologized later for using harsh language.

The state senator said he told her to cover up the cake if she was uncomfortable with it, so Peterson went one step further and smashed the sign into the cake and then threw it away. She said that was when she went on a "Twitter storm" and posted about the misogynistic cake. Cont.

Mom Sends Note With Daughter To School Saying She's Being Held Hostage

Story out of East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana:

A suspect wanted on several warrants was arrested after a child went to school with an alleged hostage note from his mother, according to the East Feliciana Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said they received a call around 8 a.m. Tuesday when an 11-years-old student came to school with a note sent by his mother. The note claimed that she needed help and was being held against her will by a man identified as Donald Ray Guy.

Because Guy had a history of running, the sheriff's office called in K-9s from Dixon to assist law enforcement at the home on Folly Brown Road.

Deputies were let it into the house with a warrant and searched the residence to find the suspect hiding in a closet.

The sheriff's office reports Guy was arrested without incident and no one was injured. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Cops Slaughter 6-Year-Old, Claim Self Defense

Story out of Marksville, Louisiana:

A deputy city marshal charged with murder after a police body camera captured a 6-year-old boy's fatal shooting is asking a Louisiana judge to throw out his indictment, saying he acted in self-defense by opening fire on a car driven by the boy's father.

Prosecutors from Attorney General Jeff Landry's office said the video shows two deputy marshals firing from "a safe distance" as Christopher Few's car was backing away from them. "Perhaps most important, it shows Few with his hands in the air pleading for the officers to stop firing. They did not," prosecutors wrote in a filing this week.

But Derrick Stafford's attorneys say the video recording lacks audio for the first 27 seconds, making it impossible to determine if Stafford started shooting before or after Few raised his hands inside the car. Neither deputy knew that Few's son, Jeremy Mardis, was strapped in the front seat until after they stopped shooting, Stafford's attorneys added.

State Police have said the deputies opened fire on Few's car after a pursuit joined by a third deputy marshal and Marksville Police Sgt. Kenneth Parnell III. A police report says video from Parnell's body camera shows Few's empty hands were raised and visible inside the vehicle when gunfire erupted. The video hasn't been publicly released.

Stafford and Greenhouse await separate trials on second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges. Few was critically wounded in the shooting. Cont.

"Epic Disappointment" - Judge Feels 20 Year Sentence For Former NFL Star Too Light

Making clear that she thought the sentence was a light one, a Louisiana judge Thursday formally imposed a 20-year prison sentence on former NFL star Darren Sharper, who last week was sentenced by a federal judge to 18 years and four months in a drug and rape case with victims in four states.

Defence attorney Billy Gibbens said that the two sentences are essentially the same, when credit for time served and other factors are considered. The sentence follows Sharper's guilty pleas in state and federal courts in New Orleans, and pleas of guilty or no contest to similar charges in Arizona, California and Nevada -- all the result of a multi-jurisdiction plea deal that once called for a sentence of about nine years.

Early this year, U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo rejected that sentence as too light. She imposed the 18-year, four-month sentence last week.

In state court on Thursday, Judge Karen Herman made clear she thought two decades was a relatively light punishment for the fallen NFL star, calling his behaviour "such an epic disappointment."

Thursday's second sentencing hearing was again punctuated by tearful testimony from victims. One who said she was determined from the time she realized she had been raped in 2013 to see him prosecuted and see him branded as "a serial rapist and a sex offender." She added that, for months, she woke up screaming in the middle of the night because of the ordeal.

Sentenced to nine years already in Arizona, Sharper still faces formal sentencing in California and Nevada. He is expected to serve his sentence in federal custody. Cont.

"Biblical Proportions" - God Sends Flood To Destroy Home Of Anti-Gay Crusader

Story out of Southern Louisiana:

Tony Perkins, president of the anti-gay religious lobbying group the Family Research Council, had his home destroyed by the massive flooding ravaging Southern Louisiana this week.

Calling into his own radio show, Perkins described the flood as being of “biblical proportions,” adding that he and his family will have to live in a camper for 6 months until the damage is repaired.

But Perkins was careful to point out that this particular flood wasn’t because of the gays, but rather an “incredible, encouraging spiritual exercise to take you to the next level in your walk with an almighty and gracious God who does all things well.”

The floods in Louisiana have so far killed 11 people and destroyed over 40,000 homes. Cont.

Sheriff Goes On Racist Fueled Tirade, Threatens To Shoot Prosecutor Between His "Jewish Eyes"

Story out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana:

A south Louisiana sheriff was taped making anti-Semitic threats that he apparently directed at a federal prosecutor assigned to a civil rights case against him, according to a court filing.

Prosecutors said in Wednesday's (June 29) court filing that an "unsolicited informant" recently provided them with a series of recorded conversations between Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal and others. A transcript of one conversation includes Ackal recounting a meeting with a prosecutor in which the sheriff claims he threatened to shoot the prosecutor right between his "Jewish eyes" after the prosecutor vowed to send him to prison.

Ackal's meeting with the prosecutor and other federal authorities occurred before Ackal's original March 9 indictment on charges over the alleged beatings of five jail inmates, prosecutors said. Cont.

Twins Found Dead After Sneaking Into Hot Pickup Truck

Story out of Bossier City, Louisiana:

The deaths of the Bossier City twins discovered in a truck over the weekend were heat-related, according to preliminary autopsy results.  Oliver and Aria Orr, 3, were found unresponsive by their mother inside the family's pickup truck in the driveway of their Horseshoe Trail home on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the children, but they were pronounced dead at Willis-Knighton Bossier hospital.

Neighbors have told police that the twins' mother, who was home at the time, had contacted them saying she was looking for the children.

"She just said that she had fell asleep and now the door was wide open and the babies were gone," said next-door neighbor Rhonda Matthews.

Matthews said after a search, the mother found Aria in the front seat and she found Oliver in the back seat, looking like he had been sleeping.

"He was sitting in the floorboard and he had put his head in the seat," Matthews said. "I did CPR on both of them." But, Matthews said neither of the toddlers responded to CPR.

Investigators are still working to determine whether the children would have been able to open the door of the truck themselves, but Natale was not able to say for sure whether the truck had been locked. He did confirm that a step-stool was found next to the truck. It is not known how long the children were missing. Cont. (Video)

Former Louisiana District Attorney Guilty Of Preying On Women, Offering Them Leniency For Sex

Story out of New Orleans, Louisiana:

In 2010, a woman made a desperate 911 call to report that a powerful prosecutor sexually assaulted her at her home. Six years later that prosecutor has been called a sexual predator by authorities and faces a possible prison sentence.

Records released Thursday reveal that sheriff’s deputies summoned an FBI agent after Danelle Keim called for help and reported the allegations about Harry Morel, who served as St. Charles Parish’s elected district attorney for more than three decades.

Keim became the key witness for the FBI in its long-running investigation of Morel, who pleaded guilty Wednesday to obstructing a federal investigation of the sex abuse allegations. Authorities say Morel repeatedly abused his power to prey on vulnerable women, offering them or their relatives leniency from his office in exchange for sex.

Investigators accused Morel of soliciting sex from at least 20 women during his 33-year tenure in office.

Morel, who is free on $50,000 bond pending sentencing, served as district attorney from 1979 to 2012. After opting not to seek re-election, Morel served as an assistant prosecutor under his successor for several months before retiring amid the FBI investigation. Cont.

Retired NFL Player Will Smith Shot And Killed

Story out of New Orleans, Louisiana:

Will Smith, a prominent member of the New Orleans Saints team that won the NFL's Super Bowl in 2010, was killed by a gunman who shot the retired football player after ramming his car near the city's famed French Quarter, police said on Sunday.

Investigators were trying to determine whether the shooting, which also wounded Smith's wife, was a case of road rage or whether there was some other motive, police said.

The suspect, Cardell Hayes, 28, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, the New Orleans Police Department said in a Twitter message.

Smith, who was one of the National Football League's top defensive ends before his retirement in 2014, was traveling in a Mercedes in the city's Lower Garden District shortly before 11:30 p.m. CDT (0430 GMT) on Saturday when his car was rear-ended by a Hummer.

Smith, 34, exchanged words with the driver of the Hummer, who took out a handgun and shot him several times, New Orleans Police Department spokesman Juan Barnes said in a statement. Cont.

Man Could Face 20 Years In Prison For Stealing $31 Worth Of Candy Under 'Habitual-Offender' Law

I'm outraged (as long as a gross Mars bar wasn't among the
candy's.) Story out of New Orleans, Louisiana:

A career shoplifter, Grimes faces a possible 20 years to life in prison after he allegedly stuffed $31 worth of candy bars into his pockets at a Dollar General store on South Claiborne Avenue on a December afternoon.

A manager at the store spotted the 34-year-old swiping the merchandise about 2:30 p.m. Dec. 9, and Grimes unloaded his pockets before his arrest, according to a police report.

On Feb. 3, Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office chose to charge Grimes under a statute that boosts the alleged candy theft to a felony punishable by up to two years in prison. The statute applies to people who have been convicted of “theft of goods” at least twice before.

Grimes has five prior theft convictions, making him a “quad” offender under the state’s habitual-offender law, and facing 20 years to life behind bars.

The case appears to be an extreme example of a common practice in a state with one of the stiffer habitual-offender laws in the country, according to reform advocates. Cont.
