Man Wants To Sell Guns Disguised As Cellphones

Thankfully the owners of this thing will have Obamacare for the eventual influx of butt-dial injuries.

A Minnesota startup is making headlines today for its novel solution to the age-old problem of "children being frightened by strangers with guns."

Behold, the double-barrel .380-calibre handgun by Ideal Conceal: a gun designed to look exactly like a smartphone, complete with fake camera lens and headphone jack.

Critics on Facebook and Twitter are saying that the invention could pose security threats, or accidentally harm kids who think the gun is... well, not actually a gun. Cont.

Man Takes Selfie With EgyptAir Hijacker During Incident

A British man who posed smiling for a photo with a hijacker on board an EgyptAir flight has said he did it to take “a closer look” at the apparent explosives belt, adding: “I figured if his bomb was real I’d nothing to lose anyway.”

Ben Innes, 26, was one of three passengers and four crew held to the end of a hostage siege, after Seif Eldin Mustafa hijacked the EgyptAir flight bound for Cairo from Alexandria and forced it to be redirected to Cyprus.

The plane landed at Larnaca airport, where Innes was snapped standing next to Mustafa – who was still wearing what he claimed to be an explosives belt – in the cabin of the Airbus 320.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley Expelled From Baptist Church After Extramarital Affair

The First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa has expelled Republican Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and a female staff from its membership amid a raging controversy over an inappropriate audio recording that suggested the governor had an extramarital affair. Bentley was a deacon in the church.

"While church discipline is a church family matter, both Governor Robert Bentley and Mrs. Rebekah Mason are no longer members of First Baptist Church Tuscaloosa. I continue to pray for each of them," Senior Pastor Gil McKee told Christian News Network on Friday.

Spencer Collier, who was recently fired by Bentley as secretary of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, had accused Bentley of having an affair with Mason. Collier said he heard a tape recording in 2014 where the governor made sexually explicit comments to Mason. Cont.

Anti-Vaxxer Mother Turned ISIL Supporter Arrested Last Month

A link between drinking turpentine and Islamic extremism, think about it.

Before she was tweeting in support of ISIS, a Missouri mom was blogging about vaccines causing autism and “chemtrails” poisoning Americans.

Safya Yassin was arrested last month for threatening the lives of federal agents with pro-ISIS messages. But her complete online trail raises the question of whether she was a true believer in the Islamic State or just a lonely single mother who yearned for attention. Members of her family, for what it’s worth, think she’s anything but a Muslim fanatic.

On Feb. 18, the Federal Bureau of Investigation took Yassin into custody after they said she “retweeted the personal identifiable information of two FBI agents with the statement ‘Wanted to Kill.’” Yassin also allegedly shared photos and addresses of U.S. military personnel and tweeted that a “media personality ‘would be better off without her head,’” the complaint added.

“The real story is, she’s not a terrorist,” her aunt, Sandra Mick, told The Daily Beast. “She retweeted and reposted what other people had posted, that’s the story.”

“She’s never been outside this country. I doubt she’s even met a real Muslim,” Mick said.

More than 80 people have been charged with ISIS-related crimes in the U.S. since 2014. Most of the accused were not planning attacks on the homeland. Instead, they’re believed to have tried to go abroad to join the caliphate or given money to the cause. For others, the involvement was largely virtual. Last year, an Ohio man was arrested after reblogging a GIF of military servicemembers that said “kill them wherever you find them.” Cont.

Woman Fearing Eviction Sets Self And Apartment On Fire

Story out of Santa Rosa, California:

A woman who was going to be evicted next month started a fire at a 4-unit apartment building in Santa Rosa Sunday afternoon by lighting herself on fire, a Central Fire Authority fire inspector said.

McMullin then tried to escape through a bedroom window of her home at 199 Barbara Drive, but one of her sons, who was next door, kicked the door in and dragged her outside, Foreman said.

Women's Basketball Coach Fired After She Suspends Two Players For Dating

Story out of Prairie View, Texas:

The unnamed players had filed a Title IX complaint, claiming that Brown discriminated against them because they were gay, according to a university memo obtained by USA Today Sports. Brown, however, has said that she suspended the players because they broke a team rule that prohibits players, coaches or other team staff from dating one another — regardless of whether it's a male-female relationship or otherwise. Brown supposedly put the rule in place after an assistant coach was caught having a relationship with a player.

But in its own investigation, Prairie View A&M sided with the athletes, finding that suspending the players based on their dating relationship violated both Texas A&M system policy and Title IX because it discriminated based on sexual orientation, according to the memo. Cont.

Shhh - Freemasons In Tennessee Vote To Ban Gays

For a secretive organization, they sure flap their yaps a lot. Also using the words 'personal freedom' while banning gays is a nice touch.

Freemasons in Tennessee voted to uphold a ban on gay members Thursday during a members-only meeting in Nashville, according to Freemasons who witnessed the vote.

Two Freemasons confirmed the results to The Tennessean, but asked for anonymity since business conducted at the meetings is secret, and revealing it could have them kicked out of the organization. The vote took place at the Grand Lodge of Tennessee on Seventh Avenue North near Broadway.

Freemasonry is a fraternity of men who, according to the lodge's website, are dedicated to "building the moral character of its members and the preservation of personal freedom." Famed Surgeon Fired For Using His Patients As Guinea Pigs

Story out of Stockholm, Sweden:

Dreams of fame and fortune turned into a nightmare for a once-renowned Italian surgeon who compared himself to Doctor Frankenstein and now stands accused of using patients as guinea pigs.

Sweden's Karolinska Institute (KI), which awards the Nobel Prize for Medicine, fired Paolo Macchiarini this week after years of controversy.

Macchiarini used an ingenious artificial windpipe made of plastic and seeded it with the patient's own stem cells, which are immature cells that grow into specialised cells that ultimately make up each of the body's organs.

His work was initially hailed as a game-changer for transplant medicine, with the surgeon performing three such operations in Stockholm and five others around the world.

His troubles began back in 2014 after several surgeons at KI filed a complaint alleging that Macchiarini had downplayed the risks of the procedure.

Six of his eight patients reportedly died, and allegations ensued that the risky procedure had been carried out on at least one individual who had not, at the time, been critically ill. Cont.

The game was for the Peewee AA championship, involving the best young girls in the province. The TASA Ducks of Tantallon, N.S., squared off against the Pictou County Selects.

Spanish Actor Banned From Playing Jesus Because He's Too Gay

An actor who has played Jesus in traditional Spanish Easter parades for 30 years says he has been banned from the role for at least two years because he is gay.

He had modified it so it only had bare one shoulder because he feared exposing both would be considered too risque, The Times reports.

Man Denied Bank Payment Because Of His Dog's Terrorist Name

Here boy! Here HAMAS! Story out of San Francisco, California:

Sometimes terrorists move on all fours. That’s what Chase Bank apparently decided when it wouldn’t clear a payment for a disabled man’s dog walker. It was the dog’s name that led to the payment being bounced and the Treasury Department being involved.

The nine-year-old service pitbull mongrel acts as a companion and friend to Bruce Francis of San Francisco, who has a rare form of MS and gets around by wheelchair.

According to Fox, Francis was doing his routine payment to his dog walker earlier in March, by using his online account with Chase Bank. He had filled in his dog’s name into the memo line of the form. But the dog walker told Francis he hadn’t got the check.

The owner logged into his account to investigate, and found the following message: “Please explain what Dash means.”

Yes – that is one of the most common names a dog could have in an English-speaking country. But if that’s the case with your dog, just think of something else when you fill in that form, preferably something that doesn’t sound like 'Daesh' – the Arabic name for Islamic State (IS/ISIS, formerly ISIL). Cont.

Lyft Driver And Trump Supporter Goes On Bigoted Rant - Kicks Out Passengers

A bigoted Trump supporter? What are the odds? Story out of Salt Lake City, Utah:

Samuel Grenny said his driver, Dave, went on a bigoted rant and even threatened to hurt him.

Grenny and his girlfriend were on their way to a Bernie Sanders event, but they said the driver wanted to talk about Donald Trump.

“I explained where we were going and what it was for, and very quickly he seemed to tense up about it,” Grenny said.

“He started to say that Muslims categorically are terrorists,” Grenny said. “And then he proceeded to call Muslims pieces of crap, but a much unkinder word than that. At that point my girlfriend started videotaping, she was very shaken.”

The passengers were kicked out well before their final destination.

Grenny alerted Lyft about the driver, and he said within 24 hours they sent him an apology and a refund. Lyft released this statement to FOX 13 News.

“Lyft is committed to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming environment, and discrimination and racism are not tolerated. This driver’s access to Lyft has been permanently removed.” Cont. (Video)

New Mother Bleeds To Death After Begging Midwife To Take Her To Hospital

Story out of Melbourne, Australia:

Caroline Lovell died at the Austin Hospital in January 2012 after giving birth to her second child at home in Watsonia in a birthing pool.

A coroner found the 36-year-old suffered a post-partum haemorrhage but it was not picked up by the midwife in charge, Gaye Demanuele.

He found Ms Demanuele failed to monitor the new mother's blood pressure or properly examine her.

She also failed to notice the changing colour of the bath, indicating major blood loss, or call an ambulance urgently even after Ms Lovell begged her to.

Ms Lovell's mother, Jade Markiewiecz, said she hoped Ms Demanuele was prosecuted.

Ms Markiewiczs's lawyer, Michael Magazanik, said Ms Demanuele was under investigation at the time of the birth and questions remained about the role of the regulator of midwives, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

"Caroline realised she was dying and she said so. The midwives put it down to a bit of anxiety and gave her a homeopathic remedy." Said Magzanik. Cont.

Tom Green Offers Financial Help To Man Charged With Overdue Videotape

Story out of Concord, North Carolina:

James Meyers showed Channel 9 the arrest warrant Wednesday. It shows Meyers is charged with failure to return rental property, a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200. The charged had not been dismissed as of Wednesday afternoon.

The rental store in Salisbury, J&J’s Video, has since closed, but Meyers was still given an April 27 court date for failing to return the gross-out comedy about a cartoonist returning home to live with his parents.

Meyers said he was driving his daughter to school on Concord Parkway Tuesday morning when a Concord police officer pulled him over for a tail-light that was out.

Meyers said the officer ran his license and approximately 25 minutes later asked him to step out of the vehicle.

“The officer said, 'I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" and never returned it.' I thought he was joking,” said Meyers.

On Wednesday night, Meyers received a call from Green, the writer-director-star of “Freddy” who reached out after Meyers’ friend shared the story with him on Twitter, according to The New York Daily News.

Green, who is currently on a stand-up comedy tour in Australia, told the Daily News that he is happy to support fans of his film, which was the subject of terrible reviews and currently has an 11 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Cont. (Video/Autoplay)

Microsoft's new AI chatbot went off the rails Wednesday, posting a deluge of incredibly racist messages in response to questions.

The tech company introduced "Tay" this week — a bot that responds to users' queries and emulates the casual, jokey speech patterns of a stereotypical millennial.

The aim was to "experiment with and conduct research on conversational understanding," with Tay able to learn from "her" conversations and get progressively "smarter."

But Tay proved a smash hit with racists, trolls, and online troublemakers, who persuaded Tay to blithely use racial slurs, defend white-supremacist propaganda, and even outright call for genocide. Cont.

Kansas Students Who Expose Transgender Classmates Could Be Given $2,500

Two new bills introduced during the Kansas legislation session aim to ban transgender students from using restrooms that match their gender, and to pay other students $2,500 if they encounter someone transgender in their school’s restroom.

The Student Physical Privacy Act which is supported by complementary bills, SB 513 and HB 2737 requires students of all public schools and universities to use the restroom corresponding to their assigned-at-birth sex, and not the gender they identify with.

Every time a student sees someone ‘of the opposite sex’ in the restroom, he or she could sue the school for $2,500, as well as additional compensations for any ‘psychological, emotional and physical harm suffered as a result.’ Cont.

"Daddy, That's Not Grandma" - Funeral Home Mixes Up Bodies

Story out of New York:

After a long battle with cancer, Val-Jean McDonald, mother of eight sons, with more than 20 grandchildren, almost as many great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, died on Dec. 18 at the age of 81.

Her funeral, 11 days later, attracted scores of mourners to Union Baptist Church in Harlem: her sons, from Manhattan, New Jersey, Georgia, Texas and Australia; other relatives and friends; and people who had never met her but knew her children.

They all filed past the open coffin, seeing familiar remnants of Ms. McDonald’s life: a favorite pink blouse and white suit, and her finest jewelry.

“Why did they cut off all her hair?” a son, Errol McDonald, 57, remembers thinking. “Maybe it’s the cancer.” He bent and kissed her.

But sometimes children see what adults cannot. Adults rationalize. Children call it like it is.

“My 10-year-old son said, ‘Daddy, that’s not Grandma,’” recalled Mr. McDonald, a school maintenance worker in Manhattan. “I said, ‘Yes, that’s what happens,’” he told the boy, explaining that people can look different in death.

Six days passed. Then, a manager from McCall’s Bronxwood Funeral Home in the Bronx, which had handled the arrangements, called another of Ms. McDonald’s sons, the Rev. Richard McDonald, with shattering news, he said.

“She says, ‘That body was not your mother,’” Richard McDonald said in an interview. "Your mother is still here." Cont.

"I am dumbstruck" - Julia Louis Dreyfus Says Of Australian Prime Minister Ripping Off HBO's Veep

Over the past couple of days, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been channeling his predecessor and whipping out a bit of a three-word slogan. He first broke it in on 7.30 with Leigh Sales on Monday night. Then ABC Radio in the morning, before heading to 3AW and dropping it four times in less than two minutes. The phrase: “continuity and change”.

In Turnbull’s eyes, this is an eloquent way of commenting on the ongoing drama between his current government and that of Tony Abbott. “The bottom line is there is continuity [many elements of old policy] and there is change [leadership, number of raw onions eaten, et al]” he said in that first radio interview. But, to the rest of the world it looks a bit like this:

“Continuity and change” is the official slogan of Veep‘s main character Selina Meyer (played by Julia Louis Dreyfus) as she runs for the US presidency in the show’s fourth season. It appears on her campaign bus, on her logo, and (as BuzzFeed‘s Mark DiStefano pointed out) is regularly whipped out in the same kind of interviews Turnbull has been facing this week. Cont.

Botched Assassination Attempt Leaves Mother Shot In Jaw

Story out of Windber, Pennsylvania:

A Pennsylvania man who mistakenly shot the mother of his intended victim was arrested in Kentucky after calling his own mother to tell her he botched an attempt as a hired hit man, police said Tuesday.

Cortland Michalides, 22, was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and other crimes because police contend he broke into Theresa McDonald’s home about 2 a.m. Sunday and shot her in the jaw when she confronted him.

McDonald, who is expected to survive, is the mother of the man police believe Michalides meant to shoot, apparently because the man dated a woman Michalides used to date, Windber police Chief Richard Skiles said.

Police don’t believe the “hit man” story is true, only that it was an explanation Michalides gave his mother to explain his planned trip to Arkansas, Skiles said. But other details the suspect’s mother relayed about the conversation proved he had been at the shooting scene, the chief said. Cont.

Baptist Minister Sentenced To 50 Years After Hiring Congregants to Burn His Wife to Death

Thou shalt not, ah, who cares. Story out of Bloomfield, Missouri:

Last week, a Scott County judge sentenced 71-year-old Donald Lafferty to 50 years in prison after a jury convicted him on charges of attempted murder, arson, armed criminal action and financial exploitation of the elderly.

Lafferty was the pastor of Beech Grove Church, a Baptist congregation in rural Bloomfield, Missouri.

His legal trouble began with a fire. Around 8:30 p.m. on January 12, 2013, the Bloomfield Fire Department was dispatched to Lafferty's home. His wife, Mildred, had called 911 to report the blaze after being woken by the heat of the flames. Firefighters extinguished the fire, but something smelled wrong about this inferno — specifically, it smelled like gas.

According to investigators, Lafferty lied to bank officials about possessing a Power of Attorney and even provided (presumably falsified) documents to make his case. The details of Lafferty's financial con are somewhat complex — and you should really read the Daily Statesman's report if you want the full rundown — but Lafferty was eventually able to drain his mother's CD account of some $86,000. He then opened a new checking account in his mother's name and started writing checks.

Tim McCoy, the investigator, interviewed Mildred Lafferty about what she remembered the day of the fire. She said her husband had prepared breakfast that day, but the coffee tasted "horrible" and she wasn't able to enjoy her usual second cup. During a drive to Poplar Bluff, she said she felt dizzy and asked her husband to take her home, which he did. She went to sleep on the couch. Cont.

Christians Freak Out After Learning About Classroom Yoga Exercises

Isn't it weird that when activities in schools are Christian oriented, Pagans have no problem. Story out of Cobb County, Georgia:

A group of parents at a Cobb County elementary are upset over the school’s use of yoga and other mindfulness practices for students because they believe it endorses a non-Christian belief system.

School leaders at Bullard Elementary held a meeting recently with parents to address the “many misconceptions” over the issue that “created a distraction in our school and community,” according to an email to parents from Bullard principal Patrice Moore.

“While we have been practicing de-stressing techniques in many classrooms for years, there have been some recent practices associated with mindfulness that are offensive to some,” the email states.

As a result, the school is making changes. When yoga moves are used in classrooms, students will not say the word “namaste” nor put their hands by their hearts, according to the email. The term and gesture are often used as a greeting derived from Hindu custom. Cont.
